As the race for the Democratic nomination slogs ahead, a new Washington Post-ABC News poll shows Barack Obama with a 10-point national lead over Hillary Clinton, with the added insult of six in 10 voters seeing Clinton as neither honest nor trustworthy.
Sen. Barack Obama holds a 10-point lead over Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton when Democrats are asked whom they would prefer to see emerge as the party’s presidential nominee, but there is little public pressure to bring the long and increasingly heated contest to an end, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.
The fierce battle, however, appears to have taken a toll on the image of Clinton, who was once seen as the favorite. And Obama has widened his lead since early February on several key qualities that voters are looking for in a candidate and has narrowed sizable advantages for Clinton on others.
He now has a 2-to-1 edge on who is considered more electable in a general contest—a major reversal from the last poll—and has dramatically reduced a large Clinton lead on which of the two is the “stronger leader.”
-----
Will this latest reading of the voters temperature sway Hillary?
"I don't listen to polls," Hillary once famously quipped.
Oh wait. That was actually Pres. Bush that said that when asked if the overwhelmingly negative response to the Iraq Occupation by the American people influenced him at all.
Sorry. It's just getting harder and harder to seperate out Hillary and Bush. Their campaign and leadership styles are just so similar these days.

And who appointed you hall monitor? Crob, I think this is a backlash against Hillary because she thinks the people are too stupid to know what Obama meant. The Hunters and shooters Association has came out for Obama because they understand what he said and agree with him. Apparently he voted against the government Homeland Security being able to confiscate guns, and Hillary voted for it.

I hadn't heard about that Marilynn. I can see how that would definitely have an influence on gunowners votes.

crob, how about giving us some more details on how Hillary is like Bush - or was that just a meaningless smear?
-
@Blazesboy
Oh, I was just remarking how in the general sense both politicans (Bush and Hillary) have an inflated view of their own abilities and tend to dismiss any and all negative criticism. True, they differ on political objectives -- but their personalities and leadership styles have a lot of simularities. I don't think it would be out of character at all if Hillary blurted out, "I'm the Decider!" during one of her many campaign strategy sessions.
That is a purely subjective opinion of course, but basically I get the impression neither Bush nor Hillary give a shit what the "little people" think of them. -
if you need crob to give you the details, ha, then you haven't been paying attention...
-
(high five to Jade) Thanks Jade. Your checks in the mail.
Now here's something interesting....
This just posted on Current via Huffington Post "Hillary Clinton to Southern Whites In 1995 'Screw'em!' " -
I see. I feel like all politicians, certainly any with the audacity (and planetary ego) necessary to run for President, have an "inflated view of their own abilities and tend to dismiss any and all negative criticism." I mean, isn't this a requirement? What kind of person actually believes they have what it takes to be President?
-
Blazesboy, that is a fair point. A certain amount of ego and self confidence is necessary to run for President or any elected office.
But it's a delicate mixture to maintain.
Some politicans (and I happen to think both Hillary and Bush fall into this category) tend to wander off the reservation.
Both Bill and Hillary have made numerous suggestions that people that don't agree with their "vision" of how things should be done are stupid or simply haven't had it properly explained to them. That can only be described as arrogrance in my opinion. In Hillary's world intelligent people don't disagree with her. Ever.
Sticking true to your original vision when others doubt it is a good characteristic of a leader -- but a good leader also need to be able to evolve, to bend, to accomodate and intergrate differing points of view, etc.
We know Bush can't do that. At all.
And everything I've observed from Hillary leads me to believe that she suffers from that same fatal flaw.
She knows best. She'll be happy to explain it to you until you finally agree she's right or she'll be happy to ignore you.
We've already had 8 years of that. -
Crob, are you trying for the resident sage spot? I agree with you completely on this. I kinda had my eye on that spot myself......

Hall monitor? Listen up my point is that I'm all for Hillary but I do like to hear all sides and not be a narrow-minded person thats why I said something about using a forum to push your personal views. How bout being open to all views and discussing them rather then just saying I'm right your wrong.

watch this comment being used hereIt's amazing how people believe polls when it is their candidate "ahead," and say they are rigged when it is opposite. What's even more amazing is that people actually think any poll gages the entire country. ex: 60% of 1400 is about 800 people. Hardly representative of 300 million. Yet, the poll will be printed in the newspaper as reading, "60% of Americans approve of whatever"... It's all a delusion. Polls in 2000 showed that Bush was going to win the popular vote too.

This is a good conversation. Let's stay focused. Nice drop, Pwdrskir. This is the kind of data we need to see. While I do have my preferences, either way, I will vote for which ever Demo wins. This bizzaro version of conservatism needs to go post haste.

We need Obama. Enough said.
-
The similarity between W and Clinton is, they both would rather tell you something negative about someone else, then to answere, clearly, any part of their position. It makes it seem that their position is indefensible. If they thought it was defensible, then they would be talking about it, instead of telling us something negative about another person. It makes Clinton out to be a neo-con instead of the compassionate populist the she pretends to be. All she had to do was show up, and just be herself. Instead she turned into a republican!
-
Hmm, so she was honest enough to be elected a Senator, but not President? Ok.

During last nights debates soon-to-be-President Obama was asked about his association with Bill Ayers of the Weather Underground. The implication was that since he casually knew the man that must mean Obama agrees with every single thing that man has every said or done. Obama calmly pointed out that he was only 8 years old when all of Bill Ayers activities took place and, no, he does not agree with the actions of every single person he happens to meet.
Hillary got into character and then pontificated about how she was "worried" and "deeply concerned" about Obama's association with this man. Even going so far as to say it will hurt him in the general election.
Looks like she got Obama good, right?
Not exactly.
Obama countered by pointing out that Bill Clinton (her husband!) pardoned Susan Rosenberg who had several ties to terrorists groups in the 70's and 80's. The groups included the Black Liberation Army, the Weather Underground, and The Family.
The hypocrisy! Hillary KNEW Bill had not just known former Weather Underground members, but went so far as to issue some of them Presidential pardons -- and then has the gall to act "shocked" that Obama would even live in the same neighborhood as one of them?
That little scene in the debate illustrated to me that Hillary will say ANYTHING to get elected. -
Wow that debate was terrible. It was something I come to expect from Hannity and Fox News. 50 minutes without one important issue. And then Richy Rich Gibson asks about capital gains taxes. Anyone concerned about capital gains taxes should get taxed. Simple as that
I just read this comment on YouTube concerning the whole flag pin hubub:
Larry, wide stance Craig wore his pin while pimping for sex in an airport restroom. Foley, trolling for boy toys wore his flag pin, Bush wore his pin when he declared the constitution is "just a goddamned piece of paper" and Rice, Cheney, Ashcroft et all wore theirs when discussing not just torture but HOW we would torture. The flag means nothing without the courage to stand up for what's right. If this is THE litmus test, then we don't deserve our freedoms. That pin becomes scrap metal.
Couldn't be said any better. -
listen.....
this website is all about personal opinions.
thats what Al Gore created it for. Yay I just rhymed!!
I do believe though that Hilary is just playing typical D.C. games and I can't stand it. Because I really had faith and respect in her. and after watching the debate in Philly I lost all respect. I feel bad for Obama because I feel like he doesn't waant to be a part of the typical D.C. games but because Hilary is so into playing them he has no choice but to fight back. I say give us someone who has the balls to fight back. -
njlash, you said it. Worst....debate...ever!
Capital gains tax?
99 percent of the people in America were looking at each other and asking, "What the hell is a capital gains tax?"
And for the moderator to insist, "This will effect middle Americans!"
Um, not really!
I especially loved the theory that if you make just under $250,000 your still considered middle class.
I define middle class as between $30,000 - $60,000 for the most part. If you're pulling in $150,00k I really don't see you as someone going to Wal-mart on weekends buying plastic lawn chairs.
I may be wrong though. I may be out of touch. -
Well, in all honesty I didn't watch but snippets here and there of this 'debate' because it was too horrible to sit through. ISSUES? What ISSUES? All this particular snippet proved to me however, was that they really are the same. Obama always tries to take the high road as if he is pristine. He did it regarding Tony Resko, Rev. Wright, and he is doing it again. He isn't pristine, he is no different than the Clintons in his associations, and he is in this just as thick. But whether they knew these people or not will not ultimately help this planet should they decide to allow thirty new nuke plants to be built... or keep troops in Iraq or expand this war elsewhere.... or fail to honor their promises as so often has happened in the past. And those who harp on things like this constantly just to "get " Hillary Clinton or him are in my estimation no better than the MSM that spoons this slop out.

Jan, Hillary has let us down! She was our hero. She has exhibited the kind of political statesmanship (stateswomanship?) that we admired and we felt like we could count on her.
Now she is running a republican campaign. She is turning people off. How am I going to feel happy and be proud of my candidate when the candidate exhibits the behavior of someone who feels she can't defend her own position and has to use character assasination like a republican? -
Polls are stupid. Good job JanForGore. I know I've been picking on you lately - but that was a good series of unbiased, logical comments.
Does anyone know when we plan on shifting our focus to promote a Democrat '08 campaign rather than Obama '08 / Clinton '08 campaigns?
Do we really have to wait until the primaries are over? I don't think I can take a whole summer of the same arguments. -
Hillary should start thinking about the outcomes of what she says. The whole helicopter under sniper fire thing is what killed it.
-
I've just been emailed by some family members living in Penn. that Hillary has switched to all-out 100 percent negative attack ads against Obama.
That is to say, she's not running a single ad (as of this posting) talking about how great she is in order to win votes, but rather talking about how horrible Obama.
A risky strategy.
The most immediate problem I see with this strategy is that the mood of the country is that the voters are hungry for hope, not more hate. They've been overdosed with Rovian scare tactics for 8 years. They want something different. Just using that aggressive tactic alone might already be backfiring on her. The second big problem with the approach is that, basically, Obama isn't THAT bad. Running those kind of ads against McCain may get some traction in the general election....but running ads with scary music talking about how horrible Obama (The Mr. Rogers of politics) is just doesn't make sense. I don't see a lot of people really being convinced that, yes, Obama really is a vindictive asshole that hates everyone. They'll most likely just get turned off by what they view as typical attack-politics (especially since she herself just said in the debates the Obama will win the election if she's not the candidate)
If she had stuck with talking about her plans and policies, I think she could have won big. But by focusing soley on how "evil" Obama is seems like a major miscaculation.
We'll see how it plays out. -
I don't see why people are so critical of Crob here. Last time I checked this website was pretty opinionated.
-
Crob, I'm happy to hear about her ads. She might as well be running the streets naked, she couldn't turn people off more. I hope the United Steel Workers come out for Obama, they might.

HathamALShabibi (wow, that's a mouthful) that's actually only one of a few mild criticism I've ever gotten on Current -- and they may have had a point. I probably should have only added my opinion as a seperate comment and not within the description of the link. Hard to say. It's all a matter of taste.
MM -- Hillary made an interesting statement during the debate. She said, "Everyone knows me. Everyone knows everything about me and knows all my dirty laundry!"
She was trying to make the point that she would be a stronger candidate in the general election because unlike Obama we already know everything there is to know about her.
And yet people still perfer the unknown guy over her!
Yes, Hillary, everyone knows you inside and out and the country is STILL going with someone they barely know rather than you!
If Hillary can't get much support NOW among Dems (and we know everything about her) than how the hell does she except to win over Repubs and Independents in the general?
I think she inadvertently proved that of the two she is actually the weaker candidate going into the general. If she can't dominate now (among her base!) going up against an "unknown" then how did she expect to do better against McCain in the general??? -
How could they not know her It's packed in her baggage?
