Rock star Bruce Springsteen endorsed Democratic Sen. Barack Obama for president Wednesday, saying "he speaks to the America I've envisioned in my music for the past 35 years."

In a letter addressed to friends and fans posted his Web site, Springsteen said he believes Obama is the best candidate to undo "the terrible damage done over the past eight years."

"He has the depth, the reflectiveness, and the resilience to be our next president," the letter said. "He speaks to the America I've envisioned in my music for the past 35 years, a generous nation with a citizenry willing to tackle nuanced and complex problems, a country that's interested in its collective destiny and in the potential of its gathered spirit. A place where '...nobody crowds you, and nobody goes it alone.' "

  • Will he authorize the use of this song?

  • i'm sorry , but bruce sounds like he had a speechwriter compose his statement - it's just too good for a guy who , next to melencamp ( msp ? ) recorded some of the most droll and patently stupid ,vacuously "patriotic" music , ever .

  • Way to go Bruce, I wondered where you were. Just in time to help in Pennsylvania.
  • At least John Mellencamp supported the best candidate before he was forced out. Though really, anyone who needs Bruce Springsteen or any singer to tell them who to vote for...

  • all of the musicians whose words could possibly inform my voting proclivities have been dead for a while now - they were former slaves , or one generation off the plantation , and they knew what "oppression" was - and i can't bring myself around to thinking any guy whose worth more than the GNP of a nation in africa really knows what "oppression" is . regardless , GO OBAMA

  • He is the voice for the working man, This is a wonderful endorsement. Makes me a happy camper. This is mega big.
  • Who gives a Fuck what Springsteen has to say?
    lapedro
  • He is important don't you know. Personally, I wish "entertainers" would keep their preferences to themselves regardless instead of foraying into politics as if what they say is any more important than what we have to say.
    JanforGore
  • lapedro, Apparently not you. But, you don't have millions of fans that listen to you.
  • I think "entertainers" should probably enjoy the same freedom of speech that we all take advantage of everyday on this site. I don't remember this kind of reaction when Jack Nicholson was cutting spots for Hillary. If you don't like what he's saying, don't listen. I don't understand why some people feel the need to complain when somebody expresses an opinion that differs from their own. I guess that if you're somebody who millions of people look up to because of the music you make or films you've been in, that somehow means your opinion is less valid than anonymous people on some web site.

  • Well, if you don't like what I type, don't read it. Same premise. And I stated ^all^ "entertainers." Free speech is one thing, but timing an "endorsement" for political gain thinking you will sway votes is quite another. That is really the point of them. Both sides do it and I do not believe in "endorsements" as a whole. And excuse me, but none of us are "anonymous" when it comes to the validity of our opinions, be it you, me, Jack Nicholson, or Bruce Springsteen. That wasn't the issue.
    JanforGore
  • I understand the premise. But Springsteen didn't post his opinion on an anonymous comments board. At least...not that we know. I have for a long time suspected that "Chique" might really be Bruce Springsteen, but I can't confirm it. (only kidding Chique)

I don't begrudge anyone expressing their opinion, even if that person is trying to influence voters and even if I don't agree with them. Not Springsteen, not Nicholson and not you. That doesn't mean we should be shy about commenting on what they say...only that maybe we shouldn't suggest that they keep their opinion to themselves. That was my point.

I have faith that in the end people will make up their own minds for their own reasons.

  • Thank you Krag, I think the majority of voters don't let an endorsement make up their minds for them. If the person doing the endorsement is someone you admire it makes you take a closer look at the candidate. There is no timing in free speech even in politics. Now for my announcement. I too am endorsing Obama.

  • Celebrity endorsements, are like Super Civilian endorsements. I like knowing. Like, I wanna know who Gore is backing, because he is who is and I'd like to know where he stands. Will it sway me? Who knows. I used to believe in God.

  • Obama may have gotten the much coveted Oprah endorsement, but Hillary has just announced that she has just gotten a public endorsement from...

    Dr. Phil!

Wait...this just in....yes! It's confirmed! Britney Spears and the voices in her head are now supporting Hillary!

This could dramatically influence the upcoming Penn. vote.

  • janforgore got pwn'd by krag, lol.

I do not care what Bruce has to say (politics or otherwise), but he is expressing his opinion and I think a lot more entertainers and "celebrities" should get more involved with social and political issues. However, anyone who is influenced or swayed by a "celebrity" is an idiot.

At least Bruce chose the correct candidate haha.

  • I think this is more important for what it means rather than what it will do. I doubt anyone who was a die hard Hillary supporter will be swayed by this, but I do think it indicates the power Obama has.

Bruce represents a "conservative" Democrat. The kind that goes to church, hunts, is bitter, whatever. While these people have never been "Republicans" they have also never bought into the Democratic mainstream, and as a result haven't been heard from in politics.

As cliche as it is, Obama gives these people hope, and that is why they are responding.

  • This is an interesting bit of pop politics. But don't forget, Bruce Springsteen also endorsed John Kerry. And we all remember how much help that provided.
  • asking pop stars not to voice their opinions, to "shut up and sing" so to speak (remember the dixie chicks) is asking them not to partake in democratic dialogue. clearly unproductive. So they have a microphone louder than you'll ever have. get over it. go buy a megaphone and stand on the street corner.

I guess George Clooney should stick to acting instead of getting passionately involved in human rights as UN Messenger of Peace?

I guess Angelina Jolie should endorse collagen ads instead of adopting impoverished orphans?

I guess Sean Penn should stay in the US and keep his mouth shut rather than travel to Iraq or write public letters to Bush criticizing his deconstruction of civil liberties?

I guess Madonna, Dave Grohl, Metallica, and a mountain of other entertainers should stick to venues that dont involve issues screaming for political attention, i.e. climate change at Live Earth?

I guess Tim Robbins shouldn't have given that speech?

    GIVE ME A BREAK.

I say, Good for Bruce for getting involved. Good for all of those entertainers who get involved. Good for everyone with heart enough to speak up for what they believe in. and Shame on those who wish them silenced, may they never have the power to exercise the fascist views they tout.

Political endorsements, btw, are BEST when timely.

  • i agree stephen..

whether you like it or not, celebrities have a megaphone that none of us simpletons have..

by the way, why is everyone calling him "the boss?"
    keeshii768
  • Hey keeshii768, to answer your question about "The Boss"

"Springsteen has long had the nickname "The Boss," a term which he was initially reported to hate but now seems to have come to terms with, as he sometimes jokingly refers to himself as such on stage. The nickname originated when a young Springsteen, playing club gigs with a band in the 1960s, took on the task of collecting the band's nightly pay and distributing it amongst his bandmates."

    From Wikipedia
  • To Some people Bruce Springsteen's endorsement is just as important as Al Gore's endorsement is to others.

  • But Marilynn, remember? Gore wouldn't dare endorse, he's above it all. we're reminded of that daily it seems.

  • Stephen, If I were him I might not either. I kind of think Edwards might endorse Obama though. Because I can see him letting Edwards be a spy, and getting him a jet ski.
