Secretary Powell was concerned that in his Security Council briefing he use only completely authentic data. To ensure this, he conducted an extensive — and unprecedented—review of each data element that might be included in the U.N. speech. This process took days and was performed on a continuous basis in a conference room at CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia. Powell relied upon his chief of staff, Lawrence Wilkerson, and a team from the State Department during this process. Participating CIA officers were provided by agency Director George J. Tenet or his deputy, John E. McLaughlin, with substantive specialists presenting relevant items in their fields of expertise. These meetings have usually been presented from the perspective of White House officials, especially vice-presidential aide I. Lewis (“Scooter”) Libby and Deputy National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley, who were reported as being intent on inserting a particular menu of charges into the Powell speech. But the decision to include the CURVEBALL information was also made here.

CURVEBALL is the code word for what the administration did to us and the world. They through us a CURVEBALL and we didn't see it coming.

Check out the declassified documents at the link above. Of course they have been heavily redacted for National Security Purposes.

  • Imagine all the things Colin Powell knows firsthand, that he can't even mention!
  • Yes, these are dark days in American history. I can't believe there is soo much evidence, but no investigation of wrong doing?

America seems disfunctional. Clinton's sex produced a stained dress, impeachment hearings followed. Bush's war of choice produced devistation of a country and many deaths on both sides, no impeachment hearings? Something seems wrong with this picture.

  • I am outraged that there is no trial of the Bush Administration for War Crimes. I am not a lawyer, perhaps it takes a long time to put such a case together. But even in light of Condi's recent exposure of lying and authorizing terror, all that I am hearing said is for her to resign. She needs to be brought to court! Where is the conscious of this country?

  • How many facts have to be reported before Congress has hearing to investigate the allegations (documented facts)? Is there a magic number? Before this administration, sex with a few women was enough provocation for a full investigation. Now, the bar has been raised so high, no one knows what it will take for a full investigation.

    What will it take?
Misstating facts (lying) to start a preemptive war with a country that had not attacked us and were not openly threatening us? No
    Torture complete with pictures? No
Documented proof torture was approved and guided by high level officials? No
Outing a covert CIA agent? No
Energy policy written behind closed doors, with energy executives who have made record profits from the policy? No
Economy torn apart due to mismanagement? No
Slow reaction to Hurricane Katrina and failure to help all the victims?
Bankruptcy bill put in place prior to expose of deep financial problems which protects the financial institutions and not the American public? No.

Those are just a few off the top of my head. I could go on, but I won’t. What will it take to force our elected representatives to do their constitutional duty? ???

  • It is for all of the reasons you stated Conniepae that I advocate for more power to the people through some sort of Veto power.

One million of our signatures trumps a presidential veto, or can veto a bill that the president signs, sending it back to committee.

We the people need to take the power back. We have the guarantee in the 1st amendment to peaceful assembly and to petition the government for a redress of grievances. I would say that we all have a laundry list of grievances and we need to be able to put some teeth on those grievances.

Maybe it will take changes at the local level first, then build to the state level and then on to the federal level.

We need to have a bigger voice in the government or it will forever be the domain of corporations.

  • Asking her to resign is a first step.

It would be a disgrace to her to be brought to this. Look at Alberto Gonzalez. He can't even get a job now that he is not serving as Attorney General.

What a joke that guy turned out to be. And the one before him Ashcroft, the singing bumble headed AG.

Practically everyone associated with this administration were and are incompetent, liars.

  • jubal, quote me anytime. I am writing to light a fire under Americans who are sitting on the side lines of our democracy. Any help is greatly appreciated. We can't afford to let the fire of our democracy go out.

Paul Revere would be proud if we keep up the effort. We may not have horses, but we have the power of our words and sites like current.com to spread the word.

  • The entire upper level of the Bush administration should be tried for war crimes, fraud, crimes against humanity and murder - for starters and Colin Powell should be a states witness.

In fact that's the best solution for Sen. Obama or whoever becomes the next president. Withdraw all troops precipitously and indict Mr Bush and his disciples immediately. This would hang the whole mess right around there elitist necks.
