A salty breeze sooths the sunburns across my feet, the faint voices of children are playing in the distance, the therapeutic waves of the ocean swing me to rest – this is the life. The daily routines of studying and taking tests are interrupted with a spark of adventure and new surroundings. Spring break has always been anticipated in years past, but this year the chance to relax was crucial.
It’s interesting how countries around the world value their vacations more than the United States does. The American society is the hardest and busiest working nation in the world, but we are also the most stressed and depressed country as well. Can a connection be drawn between these two? Of course there can be, just a simple walk down a city street in Europe can be your clear indication. There is a sense of proficiency in their work ethic yet at a speed that is both comfortable and obtainable. Life for many Europeans moves at the same speed as most Americans, but they are able to balance work and play resulting in frequent vacations and ultimately a stress free life.
I dig my feet out from under the sand and collapse my tropical-color umbrella, this vacation is over. I understand that this opportunity has become an uncommon pattern in the United States' cycle of work. Nevertheless, I take my days at the beach, like each breath of air, nice and easy – maybe others should do the same.
