  • Agreed. Education and access to healthy foods, gym memberships, health care - things that really make a difference on your health - the poor and the working class can't afford. As well as this insidious lie that healthy, organic foods are somehow "wimpy", promoted by the "mainstream" media - really deprive them of any chances of getting healthy.

    It's a crime really. The way this society treats the poor.

    Ironically, it's the richer countries that have the highest rates of heart disease. Really poor countries have low heart disease until the people there start adopting a Western diet. Last time I checked, beans were really cheap -- and they prevent heart disease by adding fiber to your diet and substituting lean plant protein for animal protein high in saturated fat, one of the main contributors to the cholesterol that damages hearts and arteries.

  • That may be so, but the poor in the US is disproportionately overweight and sicker than the rest of society. It's because they don't have access to the things that can make a person healthy.

    While poor nations won't be dying of obesity, they die from starvation in droves. Either that, or malaria. In Africa, many newborns don't make it to their 1st birthday. They're nothing but skin and bones when the die. The poor in Jamaica eat what's called "sand cakes". They are clumps of sand fried in oil. Because they can't afford real food. True that they don't have to worry about heart disease. This is because they're too busy trying to get enough food to survive. Every day.
