Actor Tim Robbins gives the keynote address at the 2008 National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) annual conference.

The unchallenged hypocrisy spewed here can only be accounted for by understanding how starstruck the imbeciles that run the broadcasting business are when a clown like this is given five minutes in front of a microphone. Mr Robbins would have best been served giving this speech to film makers. But the end result is the same. He is the very cynic and the very divisive personality he claims to disdain.

Brilliant!!! Admit and recognize they are the guardians of the spirit ...we can appeal to the better .. producing shows that inspire, build up our strength, possess unity,...appeal to our better selves healthier, positive,
something we can be proud of....
Brilliant!!!!!!
Robbins... Michael Eric Dyson ...Keith Obermann...
my favorite three brilliant, courageous, challenging, media men!!!!
confront the all-pervasive, all-powerful media mogals! Think the coverage and commenary, this whole election coverage again, is pathetic, specious, petty, immaterial to real issues, frustrating, and really ridiculous crap! .
come on - the power and all-pervasive impact, infiltrating, and, subversive, insidious, purient, ... media fills in our lives.
And, this coverage of the candidates for president certainly, is annnoying, negative, vindictive, catty,
mindless chatter.
This was a powerful challenge to the media mogals Robbins stood before. Let's get real. Men of Character. Confronting their collective conscienceness, to sieze the now, carp diem. Elevate the conscienceness of the media audience. We, Society. Tap a much richer well!!

Maryrosedavich, my sentiments exactly despite the garbage spilled by Bud Dickman/Phil Hendrie (who is no doubt hurting for listeners and using his tried and true hate-speak and controversy to grab for them.)
Phil, do you even have a radio show that is broadcast in any major market in the U.S. or have you been relegated to the pajama-clad "radio-blogger" crowd?
Bud, are you one of "No Ratings" little made-up "characters"?
For a guy who has never cracked into the major broadcast markets and who lives on the periphery of the industry, Phil Hendrie certainly has a lot of nothing to say.
Perhaps he should see if the Bush Administration and General Petraeaus could get him a gig at Abu Ghraib with some guest appearances at some of the foreign gulags and Gitmo. Sounds like he could preach some more about the superior Neo-Con love and weaponry that is currently "saving Iraq"
He's a regular "uniter" just like his hero and our Idiot Savant President.
Bud, be the "uniter" your rumdumb friend and creator thinks you are and go find some Lush Rimbaugh-like blog in Radio Rightyland to post on.-

I disagree about Phil Hendrie. His only schtick is fooling the less than intelligent. I've always thought of him as a moderately intelligent trickster who would not be capable of surviving with an audience made up of people who were more intelligent than he.
He preys on the confused and less intelligent by fooling them with his own made-up characters which are not even on the level with even ingenue level SNL extras.
He doesn't even do convincing voices for his featured misfits.
Genius? Not IMHO and on the subject of Tim Robbins, woefully off-target and perhaps even jealous of the acclaim.
Phil the Pill's "Pitch" to debate Robbins on his own show was self-serving and pathetic.
Sorry, Cosmo. We agree on many things but not on Phil Hendrie's talent.

We the media makers and media audience have to do better, but we still value profits above all else. This is right now our demise.
-
Well, he brings up a lot of points that, what seem to me, as common knowledge. Can anyone say "Orwell Rolls In His Grave"??? On this subject I can pessimistically say that the general public will never support the better of journalism. It may not be "out of the question" as Mr. Robbins may say. It is however not enough to persuade those who hold the power of the media to change. Money inevitably will always decide this particular issue.

What guts, how eloquent a speech. I can only hope somebody out there heard it. The press has given away all of their power. The pen is no longer mightier than the sword. All of the atrocities involving the Iraq war is proof of that. He so clearly spelled out the media's absolute failure to provide the substantive information that we so desperately need. (AND WANT)
When a people or a government has failed to act responsibly it is the media's responsibility to take action. Where are they?
No wonder only 28% of the USA citizens know how many soldiers have lost their lives in the despicable war. Who would keep us informed....not the press.
Do they think the rest of the world isn't watching?
If I want REAL news I'll watch BBC.
If I want the skinny on the Globe or the National Esquire, Then the US media will come through for me. -
A fine anti-dumbing down speech by Mr. Robbins.
-
It's another testament to our fine media that no one captured the speech on camera.

Tim Robbins is us dude...you are us Phil. You seem angry and like you might need a heart pill any second. relax it will be Ok. No one knows who you are but now that you are attacking a movies star that you don't know maybe the fame will rub off? Who knows? At any rate this is why free speech is a wonderful thing.

vague.

I think Phil Hendrie is right. Tim Robbins is a hypocrite. The broadcasters and the media do not feed the lowest common denominator. Both the movie and the broadcast industries provide both news and entertainment in a way that appeals to the largest segment of the listening public. The media mirrors society, society does not mirror the media.
-
DonKing: wake up. The media is a subjective and selective force and it goes along way in DICTATING what society cares and doesn't care about. If we had a decent media in this country George W. Bush would have been in jail a long time ago.

This is really interesting to me because a) I'm a journalist and b) I'm really tired of what I see on local newscasts. It was interesting how Tim Robbins called stations and companies out, but at the same time-- what about Hollywood?
-
Tim here is a brave soul, he picked a fine, fine audience to give this keynote speech to, and i couldn't agree more with what he has sad.
