Venezuela dispatched a fleet of airplanes carrying 364 tons of food on Sunday, Xinhua reports.

President Hugo Chavez said the shipment is to help relieve the crisis in Haiti where a nationwide crisis has hit the country for the past nine days.

Haiti is now in turmoil over rampant shortage of foodstuffs due to price hike.

President Chavez said his country has supplied meat, chicken, ham, milk, vegetables, olive oil and lentils to Haiti.

In recent months, rising food costs have led to social unrest in several countries such as Haiti and Egypt as governments struggle with a growing crisis sparked by a whole series of price increases in basic commodities.

This was a good tactical move by Hugo Chavez, he needs to rebuild his international reputation after the near-confrontation with Colombia.

  • Wow, the U.S. hasn't done anything about the food crisis in Haiti I'll bet. In fact, thanks to Current.com I'm just now hearing about it. (could be the fact that I don't watch TV or read newspapers, LOL)

  • Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has rejected allegations from Hugo Chavez and others that biofuels are responsible for the recent rise in global food prices.

  • Hugo Chavez a dick? No bloody way! Furthermore, his international reputation was heightened, not lowered, by his confrontation with Colombia.

People, especially in America, are dismally ignorant about the greatness of the man and his extraordinary achievements. Want to really know about Chavez? Click on the link below.

  • hehehh in venezuela there's a lack of milk, eggs, and other basic foods.

you do the math people :), dont buy politicians, they are all full of it, always will be...forever and ever.

  • If anyone needs to rebuild its international reputation, it's the United States. Our current president has done nothing but contribute to the world-wide cost increase of food along with causing everyone in the world to frown upon the U.S. Maybe Bush can learn something by the humanitarian efforts of Chavez.

Unfortunately, we are in too much debt to be helping out other countries. We are going to be knocking on doors of other nations begging for food here before long, if something does not change.

  • The US are in fact largely to blame for the food shortage in Haiti. The US persuaded Haiti to remove rice import taxes. As a result, subsidised US rice brought down the price of rice in Haiti forcing many farmers out of work and causing local production to collapse. This has devastated the once-successful rice growing regions and people there now rely on food aid. Now that Haiti does not produce its own rice, it is more vulnerable to global food price fluctuations.

  • Great news for Haiti. When your children are starving, you don't have the luxery of politics. Food is food, no matter who sends it.

  • This was a great move on President Chavez part. His international reputation is back up and he's helped a country in crisis. Sad that more national leaders don't follow his lead.
