A British scientist has produced a mathematical model which spells out the odds of finding new life on other Earth-like planets.
Brace yourselves Sci-Fi fans. The news isn't good.

Well, I reckon that in a few decades we'll be thinking that life is the norm throughout the universe and not the exception. It stands to reason. Right? How could it not be? I'm sure we are on the verge of discovering that the universe is teeming with life.

Paultreacy - on what basis?
The only prediction for a wealth of life in the universe stems from Drake's equation, which, as we all know, is utter bullshit. Nearly all of the parameters are made up on the spot by whoever's using it.
I wouldn't hold my breath on the discovery of alien life - we'd have to be looking in just the right direction at just the right time to catch signals from abroad. Much worse than looking for a needle in a haystack. -
I'm not talking about highly developed technologically sophisticated life, necessarily, rather I'm talking about simple forms of life initially. Recent discoveries show that there is abundant methane and water out there along with all the other ingredients required for life to begin, as we understand it. I'm certain that within my lifetime we will come to understand that life is abundantly scattered throughout. I'm 38.
