Hunger in Haiti increasing rapidly

Haiti's hunger, that burn in the belly that so many here feel, has become fiercer than ever in recent days as global food prices spiral out of reach, spiking as much as 45 percent since the end of 2006 and turning Haitian staples such as beans, corn and rice into closely guarded treasures.

That anger is palpable across the globe. The food crisis not only is being felt among the poor, but also is eroding the gains of the working and middle classes, sowing volatile levels of discontent and putting new pressures on fragile governments.

Experts say there are few quick fixes to a crisis tied to so many factors, such as strong demand for food from emerging economies like China's; rising oil prices; and the diversion of food resources to make biofuels.

There are no scripts on how to handle the crisis, either. In Asia, governments are putting in place measures to limit hoarding of rice after some shoppers panicked at price rises and bought up everything they could.

Even in Thailand, which produces 10 million more tons of rice than it consumes and is the world's largest rice exporter, supermarkets have placed signs limiting the amount of rice shoppers are allowed to buy.

  • This food crisis is going to be a major global issue, even more so than global warming, if leaders do not take action now. But they won't take action unless we, the people, start pressuring them to.

  • Even without global warming as an issue it's unforgiveable the priorities with which millions and millions of dollars are spent by the richest nations in the world leaving any human on this earth with nothing to eat.

  • Check out this story on Venezuela's recent shipment of food to Haiti... It is most likely a politacal move by uber-leftist Hugo Chavez but fI'm pretty sure the starving people in Haiti dont give a crap about his politics right now...

  • On the biofuel issue - when are people going to realize that we need to consume less not figure out how to get more...

This food shortage is only going to get worse.

  • Is it me or does it seem like the life cycle of our species is reaching is peak? The over population of any species eventually leads to its own demise.

  • all across the world it seems that certain people are being starved or contracting deadly diseases...notice that i did you the word BEING....i dont think that this is happening radomly...people in africa have been dying by the millions for years and supposedly rest of the world can do nothing to help...deadly diseases that were not heard of before are killing people in india, and south america....why ....its scary when you hear scientists speak and talk aobut the future and their solution is that 95% of the world must die...and quickly if the human race is survive...i think they are going thru with it but a little slower than planned.....
ok ...i know this is out there but if you heard this prominent scientist speak in texas last year and hear the applaud from his colleauges you might freak out also.

  • Overpopulation is a major cause of food shortages. It's exacerbated though when you live on a tiny island country that's overpopulated and also mostly deforested with depleted soils and low access to clean water. They can't produce food for themselves on their own land and when a nation can't do that, things can only get worse before they get better.
