The City of Trees could have a new moniker: the city of green rooftops.
Sacramento has received a $200,000 grant from the Department of Energy to put photovoltaic panels on some city buildings, and eventually pave the way for more panels atop businesses and homes.
Similar grants went to 11 other cities.
Sacramento is "taking the lead" by installing more highly visible solar roofs on municipally owned buildings, he said.
The city's plan is to have 5 megawatts' worth of solar panels on city buildings within two years

I don't see why this doesn't happen more often. Federal spending on this kind of enterprise could take us out of our current recession (is it called a recession yet? I forgot.) the same way military spending allowed Reagan to pull the country out of recession in the 80's. Keep on financing this stuff, Department of Energy!

Agreed, these projects create new jobs, stimulate the economy and help save our environment. We all need to pressure our local officials to get on board.

I agree that this is a way to promote alternative energy usage. This is going to start soon to become more visible in every community as soon as they see how it can save everybody more money in the long run. It feels like a domino effect, one city sees how successful another city is and they want to do that too. Monkey see Monkey do :)

Good for Sac. About time - but it's very little. Are they asleep at the wheel there - it's only what, forty years late!

I must admit, I'm a tad jealous.
No, but it really is great and it's good that they're getting on the ball now and possibly setting an example for other cities. Better late than never, I suppose. -
Fabulous, keep it up America.

This is the direction we need to be taking to Stop Global Warming.
It needs to be a Holisticcollaboration..won't come in one big bite.-

Only $200,000? That is so pathetic. Especially considering oil companies just reported multi-billion $$ profits. Pump up Governator, don't leave it to the hacks in Washington to save our state, nation, planet ...
