Horrible smell covers UK - Europe to blame

A foul stench has covered large parts of England and Wales for the last few days. Many people noticed the smell described like "sick/dung/rotting vegetation" in the air on Friday morning and thought it was an issue local to them. It turns out that this is a national problem as the Met Office have verified.

The bad smell has drifted across from the continent according to experts. The terrible smell has been felt in London, Cardiff, Plymouth and as far north as Durham.

One woman from High Wycombe told the BBC "it is the sort of smell you can taste".

  • On this occasion it genuinely is either agriculture or industrial smells that would normally be easily dispersed by winds that have drifted and held mainly over Southern England for a day or so.

    When you consider this there isnt much distance between that part of the UK and Northern France, Begium and The Netherlands then this isnt such a ridiculous idea!

  • It is true, Enlgish people came from Europe less than two thousand years ago, and they and the Normans brought with them all sorts of smelly cows and dogs.

    The stink around here is mainly dog poop. It smells stronger now with the anti-smoking laws, not as much foul tobacco stink to compete with.
