According to a survey by the Rowntree foundation of 3500 people in the UK, they class religion as one of the main scourges of the 21st century by fuelling intolerance and war.

I think they inverted the the numbers and thought they were talking about the 12th Century.
C'mon! This is pseudo-intellectual atheist claptrap at its sterling best! There are no witch burnings, Inquistions, crusades, scarlet letters, or even prohibition. Religion has less of an impact on modern life than it did a thousand years ago or even a hundred years ago.
The true scourges of the 21st century is incompetency, apathy, hypocrisy, media sensationalism, and an appalling lack of critical thinking as exhibit by this article.
What is fueling the war in Iraq has far more to do with geo-politics, resources, power, and money than religion.
People need to start looking deeper to root causes than just lazily assigning blame to some person, institution, or belief system then doing absolutely nothing.-

I think that this could only be true when applied to extremists, because so far as I'm aware, every major religion today (bar Scientology, I don't know much about that) has parts of it's Holy book that preach peace, even in the Koran, and there are definitely parts of the Bible that promote acceptance towards other people.
The only reason that the Western image of muslims is the "blow everyone up" image, is because of 9/11 and Osama Bin Laden. Without him, our image of Islam and it's followers could be completely different. It's in the same way that people in Ye Olde England thought that their peace-promoting teachings actually said that they should go to war to defend Israel, which is the Christian, Jewish AND Islamic holy land (although really, the holiest place on Earth for Muslims is Mecca, in Saudi Arabia).
I guess it comes down to the fact that all the scriptures and texts of every religion are open to interpretation, and therefore, are also open to misinterpretation. -
Every religion has its extremists. Every religion has its nutjobs. And every religion preaches hate in some way shape or form.
The best thing to do is to stay out of it-

I kind of agree with the article. All I need to see is how people in the US act when it comes to religion. I see people like Sally Kern who continually bash those that they see as evil in the name of their religion. People like that just anger me because they believe that their religion actively promotes intolerance when most religions promote tolerance and love of everyone. Overall I believe that religion isn't bad until it gets twisted and manipulated for the use of individuals who have something to gain. (Sound like any politicians you know?)

The fact they only polled about 3500 says it all!!!!
-
Hmmmmmm..... for some reason I feel like this was taking place PRIOR to the 21st Century. Lets pray to Lucretius!!!
Ohhhh how I love Irony.-

They could have polled 35,000,000 people and it wouldn't change the fact they this entire story is a distraction. The common thread that binds all religions is Love. My religion is compassion. I don't think compassion is a scourge of any century.

well said, Samurai Dave. we have people blowing themselves up the in name of religion these days, true. but I'd call that a problem with mental illness, not a problem with religion. the hypocrisy when it comes to people's ideas on religion is mind boggling. do we blame McDonald's for fat people? or TV for violence? (well some of us do, but the rest of us know that's a cop out) every individual has the ability to follow any religion they want. that individual can also follow no religion at all. religion doesn't come along and force you to join. people just need a scapegoat and they choose institutions instead of individuals because its easier that way.

read Sam Harris' "The End of Faith"
Religion is evil at its most extreme, illegitimate at its most moderate. In a global consciousness, unworthy.-

stephenthompson - have you ever researched the universal consciousness? Did you know Love binds all religions together? Did you know that heaven is pure Love, and the absence of Time? Did you know heaven on Earth is possible? Did you know that if you look for the good in all, good things will find you?

My view of Heaven is different than most. I believe it is an ecstacy, that can be achieved, if you have a truly positive frame of mind and follow the golden rule.
That is it.
