Pope Benedict XVI has spoken out for the first time about growing up under the "monster" of Nazism.
-
"Let us thank God that so many people of your generation are able to enjoy the liberties which have arisen from the extension of democracy and respect for human rights".
Wise words, Mr Pope!
No idea who this "God" guy is, though... :)-

Interesting….
Catholic church = Spanish and Roman inquisitions lasting 100’s of years
Nazi = Holocaust for 6 years
I wonder which one tortured, destroyed and killed more people?? -
Heck, at least he's speaking out against such things. Nazism is more tangible to people than, say, inquisitions, and everyone knows its harder to blame yourself than blame external forces. As long as he's against such things happening, I'm down.

We must remember, though, that before becoming the Pope, former Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger was head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith - once known as the Holy Office of the Inquisition.

Oh, absolutely, Adumbriation. It oversees the Catholic doctrine - such as condemning the use of condoms and other methods of birth control, with the AIDS consequences in third-world Catholic countries that we all have heard of.
From Wikipedia:
The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) (Congregatio pro Doctrina Fidei), previously known as the Supreme Sacred Congregation of the Holy Office, is the oldest of the nine congregations of the Roman Curia. Among the most active of these major Curial departments, it oversees Catholic doctrine. The CDF is the modern name for what used to be the Holy Office of the Inquisition.-

"Hey buddy, fancy joining the Nazi Youth?"
"Hmm... what would Jesus do?" -
watch this comment being used hereI find this pope intriguing. I feel that certain stands by the church are sorely outdated - their stance against condoms and birth control, for example. On the other hand, I think it was wonderful and entirely appropriate that he met with the priest sex abuse victims, and I like the stance he has taken on global warming and protecting the earth.
-
Why has it taken this long for him to speak out? Was he worried about upsetting the Nazi's in the congregation!
This is a no brainer..... It would be good if he would give us his views on some more difficult issues such as; why 20 million U.S. Catholics no longer practice their faith, should the church tell its members how to legislate and vote and what is his stance on sex toys during sexual intercourse between faithful adults?-

Another thing we mustn't forget, it was he who, when he was a Cardinal, was responsible for covering-up the pedophile priests and moving them around to other parishes instead of punishing them. He refused point-blank that they should be prosecuted and reported to the police.

Vierotchka is absolutely correct. The catholic church facilitated the activity of pedophile priests and protected them for many years before it was exposed for doing so. It is the least they can do now to meet with victims and apologise.
What they should do is turn over all those involved for criminal investigation. -
@Pwdrskir -
The Nazis. Hands down, dude. I mean, was that a serious question? -
Only took him 70 years to divulge such information. Talk about conservative progression.
Question: Did God tell him he could bring that up after or before the new sins were created last month?-

watch this comment being used herethe way some of you guys seem to think, the church should be working harder to stay in fashion...more like Forever 21, with worse lighting.
...and to think birth control (?) is amongst the central issues of faith for roman catholics is to reduce the majesty of 2000 years of intellectual and cultural achievement to a preoccupation of late-blooming social darwinists.-

i can't think of any better training for the papacy than having been , forcefully or not , a member of the hitler jugend . make no mistake - the promotion of contraceptives by any religious authority amounts to eugenics - the presumption is that only those who have sex according to church doctrine will further the causes of the church . it's not STD's the papacy is concerned about ( homosexuality isn't even an issue , so long as gays don't raise too much attention ) - the papacy wants more catholics to be born - that easy .
-
Benedict ne Ratzinger is the most frightening and duplicitous pope since Pius XII - If he hasn't to date already revealed who he truly is in his heart of hearts, give him just a little more time! If he's supposed to be the voice of reason and the personification of God's love for all people on earth - then God better help all of us to protect us from this man.

The inquisition continued right up until 1846 in many Italian states.
Queen Isabella created the Spanish Inquisition the same queen who sent Columbus on his murderous quest to subjugate the Americas.
