It is no secret that thousands of soldiers are returning home, or to Iraq with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Their memories are harsh and surface regularly, throwing the victim back into the original trauma. Gone untreated, PTSD can be devastating to the individual and their family. PTSD can easily become an excuse for suicidal ideation.
Several non profit groups representing Military family and veterans with PTSD,are suing the VA to claim damages against an organization they say has done little to help the thousands with mental wounds from war.
The VA says that they are more focused on mental illness than ever before. They also argue that the judiciary branch has no authority of the VA and how it runs it's show.
"An average of 18 military veterans kill themselves each day, and five of them are under VA care when they commit suicide, according to a December e-mail between top VA officials that was filed as part of the federal lawsuit."
The Trial starts Monday in San Francisco.

I'm not surprised that soldiers struggle after all they see.

Please explain to me why the VA says that it has to prove that the claim is service related. Who told the VA that it is better, cost wise, to set up this bureaucracy of paper shufflers that their only job is to say no?
These generals are furthering their own careers by sleeping with defense contractors and starting wars and sending unemployed people into do their dirty work. And they have the nerve to say that nobody in the universe has any right to question their actions. The is no accountability.
The Congress of the United States has to rethink ever giving a politician the power to do anything he thinks is necessary. -
Our (U.S.) government claims they take good care of their veterans, i don't think there could be anything farther from the truth. There needs to be serious change if they are gonna keep sending our people over there.

Shocking!
-
There needs to be accountability from our military. I can't believe that there wasn't any military study about the effects of war..that being said...they know and have proof.
-
I have known that the VA is an arrogant organization. They are a bunch of move ups. The intelligent ones have left because of all the crap. I have been fighting for PTSD for over ten years. The military lost me and could not find me but I have to prove I was there. I have known some who gave all. The word is, the enemy could not kill you but the VA will. They think they are mighty then God. If I could I think we should have march on Washington DC to protest the stupidly of the VA and have it reorganize.
-
This is shocking and terrible, but the headline should read "veteran suicides" not "military suicides." As is, it's very misleading because it suggests that 18 active-duty soldiers are committing suicide daily, which is not the case.
-
Shouldn't they do somethig to stop them from killing them selfs? Maby people they can go to for help. I know that war can do tarible things to people's mides. You would think they would do something about it.
-
We shouldn't be surprised. I see many Veitnam Vets living in the streets today. Our current government talks about supporting the troops when all they mean is recruiting more young people for their illegal war. To make matters worse, they don't give the soliders the right equipment when they are fighting and when they come home, they don't give them the treatment they need. Very sad. Everyone should bring this to light to people thinking of joining the service. seriously.
Now we need a new slogan to last one of 5 years:
Support the troops - BRING THEM HOME - AND PROMISE TO TAKE CARE OF THEM! -
IT IS VIETNAM AGAIN JUST MOVE BY TO A OUR GOVERMENT TO ANOTHER COUNTRY. THE CORPORATION WANT BLOOD MONEY ASLONG AS IS NOT THIERS, NO JOB FOR THE POOR SO COME DIE FOR THE RICH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
i used to volunteer at a VA hospital - i had one guy who'd lost both his arms and his legs in Vietnam - his story wasn't uncommon - he came back , his girlfriend dumped him ( and , no lie , he said that the last thing she said to him was he couldn't dance with her anymore - and she loved to dance ) , his friends came by every so often but not often enough , and he would sometimes beg me to kill him - OD him , or just arrange a suicide looking thing which couldn't implicate me - he was deprived of the right to die with "dignity" - he's still alive last i heard , drugged to the gills , and will be in the kind of hell only a sadist would wish on their worst enemy until the day he dies . absolutely f-ng sickening .
-
This is just sick. When those of us who choose to oppose this war express our opinions, the hawks are quick to criticize us for "not supporting the troops". But then this happens?
-
what the hell!?!?

This sort of despicable behavior regarding the mentally ill is nothing new for the American Government only this time the continuing saga affects the very men and women who've been putting their lives on the line to save our sorry butts. Anyone in the 'know' knows that it took NAMI up until this year to convince Congress to pass the payment parity bill for those suffering mental illness. And, you ask, who comprises the Congress of the United States? Why it's you and I ladies and gentlemen. These are the very same people that come to us on bended knee every once in a while to drink our coffee, shake our hands, and promise us the world knowing that once in a crowd they'll never have to do much for us until the next election. They fool us time and time again and we let them. If enough of us see that our service men and women are being treated like refuse after fighting in Korea, Viet Nam, Kuwait, Afghanistan, and Iraq - then enough of us will stand up and be counted. We'll say in unison that treating 'our boys and girls' with such indifference and disregard is totally and wholly unacceptable. Further, we'll assert that we don't want either Generals or Clerks averting their gaze from the problem at hand - our service people need treatment now and they had better get it or we'll scream even louder and we'll march in the streets. You cannot have the President and the Presidential Candidates offering continuous platitudes about the wonderful people serving and saving our country while treating them with contempt. The time is now to force the hand of those we elected to get the same help for the service people as they're entitled to themselves as members of Congress.

I live about 3 miles away from Camp Pendelton Marine base in southern California. My husband & I were driving back from a nice wholesome fun night at the DelMar fairgrounds, good music, food, games and rides, when along side my truck, a cab pulled up next to me on the 5North freeway. A drunk Marine was hanging half way out the back window, spitting on my truck & ranting, yelling, making no intelligible words & flipping the bird. We had done nothing to provoke this. I just looked at him & shrugged my shoulders, then they exited the freeway in Oceanside. Now, think about the thousands & thousands of Marines that are going to be coming home at some point. I can't imagine that they could just go back to good ole family living. Caring for your fellow human being, working with others etc.
How are the future leaders going to deal with this flawed system? to say the least?
I do wish them the best! If anyone else encounters this, don't react to them with anger, try to just walk away, wish them peace. I actually wrote the marine base & told them what happened & asked is there anyway to get involved with something to help them? No answer back yet. This is such a screwed up situation that we will be dealing with the rest of our lives. I hope that we can deal with it & not ignore the problem.-
