Government authority is crossing a line

Last week, Eloisa Tamez, 73, lost the latest round in her ongoing fight with the U.S. government. A judge ordered her to let Washington survey her land near Brownsville, Texas. It lies in the path of a proposed border fence. Now, Tamez, heir to an original Spanish land grant dating to the 1700s, fears that her property will be seized with good reason.

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff recently waived more than 30 laws in order to expedite construction of the border fence. He did so with little regard for the concerns of residents, local officials and environmentalists.

And though the proposed path would cut through the properties of many citizens, it would bypass land owned by the wealthy and politically connected. The Texas Observer reported that the fence would detour around the River Bend Resort and golf course, as well as developments owned by the Hunt family, whose members are major supporters of President Bush. The fence would also cause irreparable damage to wildlife; two Texas nature preserves would wind up in Mexico. They’d likely have to close.

Chertoff maintains that the fence is necessary because Americans have been adamant about border security. Yet two recent polls by CBS and CNN show that Americans rank illegal immigration lowest on their short list of the most pressing national problems.

The fence wouldn’t solve our immigration crisis. It would simply divert crossings to other places along the 2,000 mile border. It would do nothing about the 12 million unauthorized migrants already here. In fact, nearly half of all illegal immigrants entered the country legally and overstayed their visas, according to the Pew Hispanic Center. Texas Gov. Rick Perry is right in assessing the fence as a waste of money.

  • It is a complete waste of money, Bush has got some other problems he should be paying attention to like cleaning up the situation in Iraq. Oh, and getting out of office already. :-)

  • he doesn't give a damn what Americans think...is he still an Israeli citizen?

  • That is the one thing about eminent domain, if the government wants it they have all rights to it, no matter what you do. They can pay you a fair price for it, but they'll get it one way or another. Sad but true.

  • Collosal waste of resources. It doesn't matter if they build a great wall or mine field people will always find a way as long as there is incentives. Free education, healthcare, birthright citizenship, ect.

Seeing them put a fence on the border does make me feel better about taking a national ID card though.

  • This fence is a perfect example of politicians "doing something" without doing anything at all.

Penn and Teller's Bullshit illustrated how lame the border fence is. Having a team of illegals build then effortlessly cross a copy of the proposed boarder fence.

  • Time for a little analogy:

It's kind of like when you're cooking dinner, you know you've got to peel all those potatoes, and you know that's what everyone is looking forward to most. But yet you still can't face the fact that there's so many potatoes. So you put in some oven chips instead...

  • This fence thing is truly a distraction of the greater problems we face. And running it through civilians properties and wild life preserves is just bad policy, while maintaining the more elite properties.Shame on them!! I don't know how this will ever change the immigration issue...really!

I thought that was the point of our nation in the beginning anyway, we will accept your poor and basically the people that really dont like they're own country. I really don't have a problem with immagrants, but go through the Immigration and Naturalization process like you should. I used to work with an a fella from africa(don't remember exact country) but he asked for help with his tests...well at least studying for it. Now I was Naturally good in School, but most arn't, and This test had more than I was suppose to know in high school. It's mainly about the history of our country and it had more on it than I knew personally,

  • I don't like the national ID card idea. What has to be done for Americans to realize what could be done to our way of life with the use of a national ID card. If it comes with a chip, like I have heard, I'm against it. The only individuals who will actually be free from government surveilance will be the criminals who don't carry national ID cards.

Will we accept random searches, guilt till proven innocent of all (or any) Americans? Granted we have many problems in America, but what if they make things you do a crime? You will have no recourse, you will have to get in line and follow along, no matter what you think. They will track you down and hall you in for questioning if you dare to disagree. It could happen? Who would have thought this adminstration would have started a war that could not have happened if they didn't use fake documents and false facts? They did! They used journalists and trained them to use the propaganda they wanted effectively.

"I didn't care till they came for me?" Sound familiar?

  • fences that keep people out can also be used to keep people in

  • UHM, didn't we learn anything from the Berlin wall? Walls can't protect us from whatever we fear. They're building a wall in Sadur city too. What a waste of money. Too bad its our money.

  • Most people don't even mind immigrants, they just want to see them go through the process of immigration. I'm pretty sure the United States was built on immigration. This whole building a wall to keep out immigrants is a pretty pathetic attempt to "please the masses". And the thing I find even more ridiculous is that while the US government is busy tackling immigration, all the large corporations are busy outsources US jobs to India and even Mexico...

  • Chertoff's mom was an Israeli citizen, so unde the law of return he could become a citizen or be a dual-citizen. Regardless, I wonder if he got the idea for the fence from the wall Israel is building.

He's also connected to the federalist society...

  • Canada is becoming more and more enticing... Are they really considering making a national ID card? What purpose would it allegedly serve?

  • all these foolish aims and plans are buidling a house of cards thats gonna fall soon. part of me wants the rug to be pulled out from under these two-faced profiteering gangsters and another part of me doesn't want to face the chaos. maybe when americans start illegally crossing to canada and canada shuts the door on us (maybe shuts the fence) the u.s. government will wake up.
  • I'm just sick of getting mad at things and watching nothing happen, just to get more mad!

  • Before I built a wall I'd ask to know
What I was walling in or walling out,
And to whom I was like to give offence.

  • I can solve the immigration issue and national defense or at least reconstitute the military in one easy motion. Let anyone that wants to come to this country have a fast track to citizenship by first serving two years in the military. If they want to bring extended family they must serve more time. For conscientious objectors the Peace Corps or some equivalent could be substituted. Anyone unable to serve would be relegated to the conventional method of gaining citizenship but since the strain on the system would be relieved somewhat it wouldn't be quite as daunting a task. Problems solved and no need for a gerrymandering boondoggle disguised as a wall.

  • rabidlemur-- quoting Robert Frost in "Mending Wall", one time poet laureate of the US (under JFK)....give the man credit for his words.

I daresay he might not recognize his homeland under this administration of gangsters and thugs...sorry hiphop, no insult intended.

  • Everyone should know Frost, no need to quote :P

  • Is the governement going to spend money on anything useful soon? Such as school and educational institutions. Walls are expensive and will NOT stop illegal immigration. All you have to do is dig under it, or climb over it, no matter how wide or high, its a waste of money and time.

  • ELDAMON, I HAVE HEARD SIMILAR PROPOSALS, AND THIS MAKES SOME SENSE... TALK IT UP! START THE PETITION SIGNING FOR OUR "REPS" TO HEAR OUR VOICES... I'LL PUT SOME OF MY TIME INTO THIS PROCESS... YOU LEAD THE WAY!

  • jjmaster, thanks for your comments and support. Give me a day or two to get in gear and I'll see what I can come up with.

  • You guys don't get it, in two years there wont be a border between the U.S. and Mexico and between the U.S. and Canada. One more time; google "The North American Union Act".
    OIphaknOI
  • If the boarder is going to be like some weird Berlin wall, I'm going to have to pick up a sign, some sunblock, and bolt cutters and go straight for it! Ive heard good fences make good neighbors, but the government is simply flexing its will over us and making us bend, while letting their "friends" escape undertow! America is due for another revolution. Seems like most Americans need to reread the constitution.

Yes, I heard about this possible union before... and everyone has spoken about the one world government... The Lou Dobbs piece is scarey too. Is this for real? Conniepae, do you know anything about the north american union proposals?

  • Look a distraction!!! But we already know that. Of corse there are more pressing matters on the list so the US Government must get around them with such minimal ones.
    WE ALREADY KNOW THIS.
WE KNOW WE ARE JUST BEING CONTROLED
Why bother fighting if no one will fight with you?
Its just a losing battle to try and win our country back.
