Here is a link specifying Southern California Edison as a leader and trend setter. @ 250 mega watts is also a viable solution to other solar power technologies such as Towers of Power and solar fields popping up all over the deserts. The only draw back I see is the ecology of the proposed area, and local wildlife inhabitants. This would require more research, but this idea here, roof top solar panels was a brief solution in the 70's here in Edison country, but on a grand scale, I foresee the only issue is that UFO (aliens pilots) will have to wear sunglasses due to a glare being produced by a solarized planet. ( PS. that last part was a joke )

What a great idea. I think all business' should have to have either a living roof or some type of sustainable energy attached. It's not like the space is being used for any other purpose.
I tried to talk them into a living roof at my office but the roof here won't take the added weight. Maybe I should show them this and suggest solar panels instead! I really like this idea.
And I am sure the alien pilots have eyes that can self-adjust to the glare! -
Good for them!

I wish my college would do that.

JoQ, you might want to consider proposing a reflective roof coating. It can extend the life of roof systems while reducing energy consumption and demand for the building envelope.
Solar panels can be expensive. The approach that our company takes is one that promotes efficiency and cost savings.

I love it. And After rooftops, lets do car roofs. Bring the dream of "Honey, I blew up the kid" to life!

I can so imagine a few years from now researchers and scientists will find out that solar panels release some sort of toxic gas and causes genetic mutation. We weren't meant to live :(.

I don't see why we don't just coat every surface of SoCal with solar panels. I thought I heard somewhere that they require alot of water to be produced..is this true? And what other materials must be consumed in order to make the panels?

It's about time. When they built all the new buildings for the Olympics, in Atlanta, they noticed a change in the local weather patterns. It was all the heat from all those black-topped roofs! They started replacing the black roofs with white, eco-friendly material and things improved - I think. Well, I hope.

It's interesting that "they" want you and me and all the businesses to install and maintain the panels (and the electronics to connect it to the grid). If solarvoltaic was really economically sound, the power companies themselves would be investing in and building the stuff by the acre instead, wouldn't they?
It makes no more sense for each home/business to buy, install and maintain a solarvoltaic setup that it did for each to operate a tiny little turbine generator. Is Mom to be the chief engineer? How likely is it that Mr. Homeowner will plunk down $500 when some expensive circuit board on the converter blows or there is a break in the panel wiring up on the second-story roof somewhere requiring troubleshooting by trained technicians? More likely he will put it off, perhaps even to "tomorrow." No, just like previous technologies, it's more efficient for the utilities to run the show so that we can reap the benefits of economy of scale, not to mention be free from repair worries and have reliable power.
Now, if you will excuse me, I need to go into the back yard, drill an oil well and refine a gallon of gasoline so that I can drive to the store for some waffle syrup. What? You say I should tap my own maple trees? Ahh, nuts...-

If I new exactly how Edison ran it's business I would be able to say how, where, why, who, blah... they do this or that, but I do not. I am not privy to their insider info, however, I wish I was. It's also hard for us to research this since we do not attend board meetings, or economic forecast announcements other than what I receive in the mail with my bill. ;)
To respond to the inquiry - who will flip the bill? Why the government of course with the aid of new economies of scale, which means, we all must chip in via taxes, and in reality, do we have a choice to mess around anymore with the atmosphere?
There is a valid explanation to each of your questions, about who will do this or that, and the given a simple example; we all learned how to drive a car right? why not do what is necessary and actually make information available, like the net already has provided, and make laws that fine those who do not learn to be eco-friendly, and make extra money from fines to assist in "flipping" the bill for those who simply won't try or ignore the obvious.
These comments are certainly not at one person, but is aimed the MILLIONS of people who do not care, or have a defeatist outlook. This is why we are in this position we are today - i.e., global warming.
Bottom-line, a GreenerFuture should be on EVERYONE's mind.
If not, then for certain we are doomed sooner than expected for generations who will take the "warmings" and do something about it.
thank you all for your input, it's true there is much more than meets the eye, and while studying Econ at Cal State, the out look is dismal on paper. But with mindsets that promote defeat, is exactly why "We" need to change what is happening today all around us. Current is allowing us a great venue to speak and share information in a productive way. Let's continue the conversation.....
