With only two seconds between them, Dire Tune (Ethiopia) took first in the women's marathon beating out Alevtina Biktimirova (Russia).
On the men's side, Robert Cheruiyot (Kenya) took first for the fourth time catching up to the champion women runners who had started the race a half hour before the men. Cheruiyot was on pace to beat his previous record but slowed during the last miles of the race missing his record by a little over half a minute.
Cheruiyot was born into poverty and is an ex-smoker.
Weather conditions set a perfect stage for the runners. Cheruiyot had an official time of two hours, seven minutes and fourty-six seconds. Tune finished with a two hour, twenty-three minutes, and twenty-seven second time.
The top American woman placed 15th and the top American man finished 10th.
Lance Armstrong also ran the race.
