I then pledged I would do all I could as one person to stand up for this planet. I even wrote a letter to then president Nixon telling him that we needed to go back to horses and buggies if we couldn't find a way to make our cars cleaner. Believe it or not, he responded to me telling me he was thrilled that someone my age cared so much for our planet. Little did I know what he was doing in Vietnam and Cambodia at the time. However, on the environmental front the EPA was formed as people were becoming vocal about what we were doing to change the face of this planet. And it was this ad that reminded me all of those years ago that we indeed are responsible for what happens to our Earth because we are all connected. And it has never left me.
It is a shame that thirty years later we still have the same threats to our air and water that also threaten our health and safety. However, back then people came together to do what was necessary to protect our air, our water, our land, and other species. I then see no reason why we cannot do the same now, especially since it is more crucial than ever to do so.
I hope this Earth Day will be an inspiration for many more young people as that ad was for me in awakening to the challenge ahead and facing it with a renewed optimism. We did it before. We can do it again.

I started recycling to help out the planet and I found a happy byproduct...I saved a shit ton of money on garbage bills, just my two cents.

I think of this ad a lot. Everytime I see trash along the road, it just pops into my head. It really was outstanding.

A new ad campaign for a new generation. Will it be as effective as the ad above was over thirty years ago in bringing change and action? That is up to us now as it was then. Personally, I hope it moves on from watching people sitting on a couch to actually telling people the facts of what we are doing to this planet and what we can do to solve it. Watching two politicians sitting on a couch smiling at each other just doesn't inspire me or tell me anything. They are part of the reason we are at this point.

The problem with today is the influence these ads have on children, won't don't make the adults budge. Those with the knowledge, are not those with the power.

It's important to show where we've been, how far we've come toward cleaning up the planet. Carson's book (and ads like this) pushed Americans to pay attention. Pushed our government to create EPA and pass dozens of environmental protection bills. We're not "there" yet, but the Cuyahoga River is no longer on fire; it has come back to life. Love Canal and hundreds of sites like it has been restored. It all begins with paying attention, as you did the day you saw this advertisement.

This is the ad that inspired me too as a child. Thanks for resurrecting that one from the Archives.
I still think about that commercial because it really tells the story of the bigger picture, the picture that started with North America long before the Europeans came here to now and what we have done to America the beautiful. And even more; our world.
I wish the Empire would hurry up and collapse already so we can get on with the business of cleaning up the mess and creating a new earth; one based on sustainable principles.
Luke we must restore balance to the Force.....
