Nik Sheehan's fascinating portrait of Canadian artist Brion Gysin and his Dream Machine will appear at Toronto's Hot Docs film festival on April 23 and 26 this week. Gysin's Dream Machine, a narrow cylinder pierced with streamlined cutout windows that spins atop a turntable with a light inside, is designed to allow individuals to "look" at the object and experience visions induced by the flickering light.
Gysin, a contemporary and friend of writer William S. Burroughs, was an artist, painter and performance artist who lived in Tangier and later at the Beat Hotel in Paris, and whose collaborations with Burroughs advanced their writing style and craft.
Nik Sheehan's film FLicKeR features Burroughs in archival footage, and interviews with singer Marianne Faithful, singer and performer Genesis P-Orridge, poet John Giorno, singer and performer Iggy Pop, filmmaker Kenneth Anger, and turntablist DJ Spooky.
