Recruitment is at an all time low. Unfortunately the most reasonable solution to our lack of troops is to initiate a draft, but whomever does that will be signing their political death warrant.

Is all about choice and the opportunities joining the military or even first responders offer. That choice has a risk.

This war is costing america an arm and a leg!
-
the body parts, minds, and lives of Americans are put at risk every second of every day fighting wars in countries where Americas presence is not appreciated, or even wanted. We as citizens have the right to change the fate of those honorable Americans who are, at this very minute, fighting a fight that the average American will not see the benefits from. So please, right your congress man and senator, so that someones brother, mother, husband, daughter can get to see their family again; And Americans heroes will be where they belong, home.

On Education:
Our troops need to know now that their GI education benefits will provide the same quality education as our Veterans from WWII received, ‘when this mission is accomplished’. As a disabled veteran I received my VA educational benefits at age 32, but the VA was grossly under-funded so I was very over medicated by the VA when in college, and this greatly defeated the purpose of a quality education. Unless the veteran is physically disabled, waiting until ‘this mission is accomplished’ to receive their GI bill education; would also give our troops more incentive to re-enlist, while giving the VA the time needed to become fully funded and able to provide proper medical care without having to over medicate our new generation of Veterans. This is an easy and needed solution.
On proper medical care:
If these kids do not get the help they need, once again many will become just another Veteran statistic on; Homelessness, jail, our court system, domestic dysfunction, urine drug testing, probation, suicide or/and many medical absences from employment and unlike erectile dysfunction the list keeps getting longer… just like it has been for decades now. . . And The Drug Cocktail combination the VA is handing these veterans is criminal. -
Sad state of affairs. Record suicides and desertions. Maybe America isn't doing the right thing...

Now that answer would require a bit of my time to really answer that question, and about a page and a half to answer that, do you really want to know, will you actually read and rationalize my answer?

it is war. war is hell. they signed up for it with full knowledge of this possibility. it sucks but its part of the job

According to Noam Chomsky: Bush on the deck of the carrier Abraham Lincoln "provided a powerful Reaganesque finale to a six week war." Bush was free to declare, without concern for skeptical domestic comment at the time, that he had won a "victory in a war on terror" by having "removed an ally of Al Qaeda."
It was only later that some of the public at large found out there was no link between Hussein and bin Laden who in fact were bitter enemies. That, if anything, helped embolden Al Qaeda by ridding them of Saddam to allow for a sharp increase of recruitment in Iraq.
"Mission Accomplished" wasn't Mission Completed and the propaganda machine in America kept on rolling (and it still is) to make it look like we had something to celebrate.
But about this article: Those men and women signed up to go to war knowing they risked possible death or dismemberment. I'm sure they didn't realize though that they would be stuck in an increasingly unpopular war (is war ever popular?) and that the country they fought for would leave them hanging when they returned. -
I never believed in the war. I thought it stupid that Bush furiously denounced Saddam and at the same time ignored so many other horrors. I feel sick however, that we use those soldiers as our talking points, and I feel sick that all I hear now is troop withdraw. Oscar Wilde said ,” As long as war is regarded as wicked it will always have its fascination. When it is looked upon as vulgar, it will cease to be popular.” To me and my like minded friends this war has always been vulgar, through the whole damn mess of it. Now there is this great consensus of self pity and talk of troop withdraw. I know we want to safeguard or sworn protectors and at the same time uphold the condemnation of this war, but are we so consumed by this desire to leave that we are going to turn our back on the Iraqi’s?
-
Is the war worth any of this?
-
no. it's worth a lot of money to a very few people though.
-
Wow, that was impresive but I wonder how does the people look like at the other side. Any mutilated children and raped women ?!
I don't know but every time they show me only one side of the story I have the impression there is something missing. Just like FOX news !! -
Reminds of two very worthwhile things that i think everyone some look into.
A book called "Johnny Got His Gun" by Dalton Trumbo.
Also a very compelling and awesome documentary is "The Body of War." http://www.bodyofwar.com/
check them both out... they are mind boggling and perspective blowing.
"War is a poor chisel to carve out tomorrow" - Martin Luther King, Jr. -
As of right now (Thursday, April 24 2008, 4:01 a.m.) there have been 29,395 soldiers wounded http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/ops/iraq_casualt... Say it out loud. Twenty nine thousand three hundred and ninety five. While we can thank modern medicine for the survival rate increase from previous wars, the number is still startling and sickening.
And please keep in mind that this number does not include those with the damage we cannot asses with our own eyes- the mentally wounded (with Post Traumatic Sress Disorder) or those with TBI (traumatic brain injury). An acurate count of such things could never be conducted because so many live in denial, die of suicide or loose their minds and drink it (smoke it, sniff it, whatever) all away.
I know that there will be people yelling about how "they knew what they were getting into when they joined the military, bla, bla, bla" and they are right. In today's day, a soldier knows. I knew when I enlisted in 1997. I honestly thought, though, that we would never be sacrificing ourselves for the financial gain of a select few. As cheesy as it sounds, many of us joined the military for love and pride of our country. Many have joined to escape their home life. Many have joined to ensure they can feed their family. That shouldn't matter, though. No matter the reason for enlisting, no one deserves what has happened to the wounded.
And yes, elnawal, there have been casualties on the other side too. That is the bad thing about war. It sucks. Nobody likes it. People do seriously stupid shit while they are in situations they would otherwise never be in. I'm not excusing that, but I hardly think that by taking pictures of a wounded war hero and putting it out for public display rates up there with Fox news. -
270 days. Hang in there.

No matter how you view this war, look at who is making money on it;
“The study found that more Republicans than Democrats hold stock in defense companies, but that the Democrats who are invested had significantly more money at stake. In 2006, for example, Democrats held at least $3.7 million in military-related investments, compared to Republican investments of $577,500.”
“Sen. Kerry, D-Mass., a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, is identified as earning the most — at least $2.6 million between 2004 and 2006 from investments worth up to $38.2 million.” (USA Today 4-4-08).
”"The review of lawmakers' 2006 financial disclosure statements, by the Washington-based Center for Responsive Politics, suggests that members' holdings could pose a conflict of interest as they decide the fate of Iraq war spending."” (Government Executive)
The 151 politicians’ that hold personal investments in the defense contractors working in Iraq shows that if Senator Kerry voted to properly fund this war in 2004, the need for defense contractors would have been greatly diminished and he would not have made the $2.6 million in less than this two year time span. Pelosi’s take was not as great as Kerry’s, but their profit driven greed is very apparent. I still wonder why Clinton sold her stock ownership in 2007. What I can’t understand is while the VA remains grossly under-funded for oblivious political reasons; how can the Department of labor pay for the defense contractor’s medical insurance? Guess their personal working in Iraq is keeping the stock profits very high for the most corrupt of politicians’. And these are the same politicians’ that keep the VA grossly under-funded.
This war is also for these children and more credit should go to our troops, because by loving these children, they are teaching them that life with freedom is a life without constant fear. Freedom without fear is a hard concept for many of their youth. Teaching these kids how to trust is not an easy task, but one that is needed to end this war.

EPIDEMIC is not a strong enough word. Don't believe me.
READ THE NATIONAL CASE DETAILS AND SEE FOR YOURSELF.
The head of the VA mental health says they did not seek to hide anything.
This while a 20 page form is required to request help.
All while the backlog is thousands.
The end result is far worse than MOST AMERICANS could possibly imagine.
The MASSIVE HIDDEN COST of mental disorder grows even larger while the VA requests EXTENSIVE PROCESSING for potential assistance or hopeful treatment. Half do not wish to deal with the forms and delays, never to return for help. All this while they may simply not know themselves the seriousness of their own mental condition. OUR VERY BEST LOST INSIDE A MAZE OF RED TAPE.
THIS MUST NOT STAND.
WE THE PEOPLE. UNITED FOR THE COMMON GOOD, MUST REACH OUT TO THESE BRAVE MEN AND WOMEN WHEREVER THEY MAY BE.
NOW
The national case goes on in San Fran.-

Thank you, Pacer. I returned from Iraq in 2004 and stopped about a year later trying to explain about the freedom without fear thing to people.
And you too, Eco. I'm fighting the VA now.
Let's pray that the elections will bring good change for our soldiers and veterans. -
No Veteran should be required to fight the VA.
Thank You Vixen for your Service.-

The real sad part is that a lot of those GI's "would do it again" in a heartbeat. When you see it on TV, it shows a predilection for pro-war propaganda. We never see the embittered soldier who says, "I lost my limb(s) for nothing!"
