They don't have to be autonomous since they're built to protect soldiers
Robert Heinlein wrote about it long before those in 1959 as part of the Mobile Infantry in his book Starship Troopers so it's not a new idea, there just hasn't been the tech available to do it until now.
A lot better protection for the army with armor better than the knights had but not as widely useful for the general public as Heinlein's other invention of the water bed. -
