According to research undertaken by the Universities of Oxford and Exeter, a woman's diet around the time of conception may influence the gender of her baby.

The study found a high calorie diet when trying for a baby, coupled with regular breakfasts may increase the odds of having a baby boy.

The researchers believe that the trend to adopt 'low calorie' diets could be one of the reasons the proportion of male birth rates is falling in developed countries. The researchers say the modern trend to opt for low calorie diets might explain why the proportion of boys is falling in developed countries.

Out of the 740 first-time mothers questioned as part of the research, the results showed that 56% of women with the highest energy intake around the time of conception had boys, compared to just 45% among women with the lowest energy intake.
