Hagee thinks gays caused Katrina

Pastor John Hagee, whose endorsement John McCain gladly gobbled up, stood by remarks he made in 2006 that Hurricane Katrina was God's punishment for the sinful Southern Decadence party that gays were planning to hold in New Orleans.

Mccain_hageeAt that time, Hagee said: "I believe that New Orleans had a level of sin that was offensive to God, and they are -- were recipients of the judgment of God for that. The newspaper carried the story in our local area that was not carried nationally that there was to be a homosexual parade there on the Monday that the Katrina came. And the promise of that parade was that it was going to reach a level of sexuality never demonstrated before in any of the other Gay Pride parades. So I believe that the judgment of God is a very real thing. I know that there are people who demur from that, but I believe that the Bible teaches that when you violate the law of God, that God brings punishment sometimes before the day of judgment. And I believe that the Hurricane Katrina was, in fact, the judgment of God against the city of New Orleans."

Right-wing radio talk show host Dennis Prager yesterday asked Hagee to confirm if he still stands by those comments, asking, of Katrina, "I’m only trying to understand that in the case of New Orleans, you do feel that God’s hand was in it because of a sinful city?"

Responded Hagee: "That it was a city that was planning a sinful conduct, yes."

Think Progress adds: "In February, after working hard to gain Hagee’s endorsement, McCain said he was “very honored” to receive it. Since then, he has both “repudiate[d]” and defended Hagee’s anti-Catholic and “anti-anything” remarks. But as Think Progress has noted, McCain has never specifically commented on Hagee’s offensive beliefs about Hurricane Katrina or his anti-gay comments. Given the fact that McCain will be in New Orleans tomorrow, will reporters ask whether he agrees with Hagee belief that the devastated city was cursed because of a gay pride parade? We’ll be watching."

  • During the same period when Katrina happened in New Orleans, other Hurricanes happened in Caucun and in Keywest where a gay event had to be cancelled.

I was surprised myself by the coincidences between these 3 tragedies .

I do not wish any harm to anyone but it was difficut not to take notice.

I have to say that listening to Gay activists, most of what I hear is how much they do not like Christians, how much the Bible is a fairy tale and if it does not agree with them. it is hate speech etc....etc.

Personnaly, I disagree on Mr. Hagee theology on many m many points.

What are you worrying on his comments about New Orleans. If you think there is nothing wrong with what is going on in that town, then he does not have a case.

Unfortunatly the reputation of New Orleans is pretty bad. That is where we should invest your energy, on cleaning up the mess.

Between the murders, the prostitution etc...

There are many reasons for God to be offended with New Orleans.

  • i dont know about you but im tired of all these god fearing homophobes blaming. i just cant understand why god would hate that lifestyle so much. its not like they are all commiting crimes and causeing chaos. "to each his own" that should be gods new motto.

  • To assume Katrina was nothing more than God's wrath is, I believe short sighted. Pastor Hagee was not considering the many churchs and happy, peaceful families that also lived in New Orleans. I do believe it was a good thing that that parade didn't take place, but Katrina affected far more important things than just some a group of fags.
I hold nothing against any homosexuals and do not hold them in any form of religous contempt. That said I have never personlly meet a spiritual or religous gay person. Though one Christian TV host just came out so I'm sure they exist.
If I were to pick out a single reason for Katrina it would be exposing our government to be worthless, or hearing Kayne say"George Bush Hates Black People."

Shame on those who profess to know and understand God's reasons behind things, and then go on to make bold and righteous claims about them. Those people need to humble themselves before God and learn how to be true and loving Christians rather than fill the world with their negative impressions of the Lord.

I'm sure this man's opinions aren't shared by McCain, much like the pastor who made racist remarks in Chicago when he endorsed Obama. We should stop paying attention to every wayward supporter as though it's some sort of reflection on the candidates. Every candidate has their crazy followers, here's just another example.

  • What is it with candidates latching onto these ignorant religious hatemongers? Why does it seem that in order to run for president in this country you have to be attached to a "spiritual advisor" and rail on about God? To even suggest that any storm is the wrath of God to punish a certain group of people is nothing more than the transference of the hate the person spewing it feels for that group. It is absurd and hateful. Katrina happened because man is bringing wrath upon himself with his own actions. But how convenient to escape responsibility for that by blaiming "God"... the ultimate copout for the irresponsible.

  • Hagee's comments are reflective of a large "Born Again" base that hangs on his every word and finances his operation to further his outrageously twisted (or, as I see it, blasphemous) theologies.
Which god does he claim to understand in this way?
Certainly not the loving God that I believe in.
Like so many others of his kind, Hagee is a cancer.

  • Candidates latch onto them because they can give large donations to the campaign and they hope they have enough influence over their congregations to get them to vote for them.

I guess that's enough this time for John McCain to reverse his stand about "agents of intolerance" since his priority is to get elected and not worry so much about principles that he did in 2000

It is a bit funny how there hasn't been even a quarter of the scruntiny of John Hagee's connections to McCain and there was of Rev. Wright to Barack Obama when both Hagee and Wright have made similar statements.

  • I'm not voting for McCain, and I'm not surprised this nutjob supports him.
It IS "funny" how this gets not media backlash, while Obama's connection to That Pastor was treated as a warning of the Anti Christ. It's lame, whether it is viewed as positive or negative (though I'd bet McCain, unlike Obama, actually needs/ savors this guy's public support, as well as his malformed version of Christianity - you know, the votes of all those brainwashed sheeple. It's a big deal.)

Apparently, Hagee is still stuck in the Old Testament - the only place where "God's wrath" actually shows up.
    Christian my ass.
He should educate himself on his own religion before handing out ludicrous judgments to the public, and putting words into the mouth of Biblegod. His opinion is no more important than that of anyone posting in this thread (though personally I'd say much, much less).
Doesn't the book say, in many spots, that mis-representing Biblegod to further your own agenda is worthy of death...?
    Yep. Sure does.

  • I just don't get this kind of rational. Those responsible for 911 thought we needed some cleansing too. What's the difference in this kind of thinking?

You can't blame a group of people for disasters, natural or not, on the wrath of God. Tragedy befalls everyone, good and bad people, and it's about time people stop sticking God into the middle of everything when really, it's just the way of the world.

  • Not only is this idea absurd but it is proven false in the Bible. After the flood involving Noah in Genesis, God put a rainbow in the sky saying "Never again will I curse the ground because of man, even though every inclination of his heart is evil from childhood. And never again will I destroy all living creatures as I have done." There you have it, from the Bible itself that Pastor Hagee could not be more wrong.

  • Believer or not, you can't ignore the facts. The levees in New Orleans broke because the Army Corps of Engineers didn't do their jobs, not because some all mighty hand came down from the heavens and knocked them over. If the world is being punished, why is Exxon Mobil still above water?

  • It's so sad that our country's leaders are still so backwards in their thinking...Hagee's thinking that gay pride caused Katrina is not just undermining the brevity of what happened in Louisiana, but it's borderline superstitious.
  • Yes Soleil10 you are so, so right! I am guessing you probably have your PHD in Climate Studies or Meteorology, right? Because it IS a curious coincidence that 3 gay events got canceled along the path of a Class 5 hurricane! It just might be (you and I are only slightly suggesting this in order to maintain rational perspective) that God is judging people with the same condemnation as us "moral" people, but better, b/c he has the deadly power of hurricanes!

Idiot! It's people like you holding human evolution back.

Come to me about your God when he cancels Gay parades in Chicago with a hurricane. Or buries the Miami parade in snow. Then you might have a claim about your so-called miracles, and even then, it would be dubious.

I would like to hear ONE concrete, provable example that any creative force (ie, God) has any interest or involvement with any living thing on this planet. In all my years of being open minded, reading, learning, etc, I have not come across one measurable case. Yet, these people keep blathering on, many from this obnoxious, irrational moral (judgemental) high ground.

  • What can you say - McCain has allied himself with a person who doesn't understand people and who has hatred in his heart.

Birds of a feather, after all, war is an acceptable means to an end to him - even if it means the loss of thousands of innocent lives.

  • My guess as to whether McCain agrees with Hagee or not on this issue is yes. Much like any politician needing broader party appeal, he'll keep it to himself or share his true feelings with only the closest of allies. It's so much easier to be privately prejudiced these days. A good career butthole would do no less.

The American people reserve the right to question the sanity of any presidential candidate who would consider Hagee and his lunatic ravings as spiritual advice.

  • Hagee has a huge national and international following and there are many people who take his word for gospel. His idiotic beliefs do not offend those people.

Rev. Wright said things like "God damn America," along with many other comments that could be construed as being "anti-American." That kind of thing offends WAY more people than Hagee's comments.

McCain most likely does NOT agree with Hagee. Almost everything he has ever said in his political life would suggest that he does not. But that doesn't matter, because in order to win he has to get the votes of the kind of braindead bigots who agree with John Hagee. That's politics, yo.

We would do well to remember that America is chiefly made up of people who agree with Hagee (on many topics, if not necessarily this one). Those of us who would like to see a Democrat win this November should keep this squarely in mind.

  • I got to say this response to what John Hagee said about the levy breach in New Orleans, is heart felt in the gay community My understanding is God breached the levy to stop this gay parade according to his statement, What about the other people that live there and the people visiting? I know they were just collateral damage, I don't think god does collateral damage. If what he said, was true explain why people that are not gay suffered. Any person that has a friend like that could be influenced or might share some of there views

Lots of varied opinions in these comments but the point is they are opinions. Hagee can believe whatever he wants and so can the rest of you. Acting on a belief is a different matter especially if there is no physical evidence to back up a belief.

So until he tries to persecute gays for making God send in a hurricane (that no doubt killed more than just gay people), let the man believe what he wants.
    Pfestler
  • It's one thing to believe what he wants, but it's another when one tries to influence national policy based on one's prejudices. And even more despicable is the politician that panders to people like him.
  • Hence my statement, "Acting on a belief is a different matter especially if there is no physical evidence to back up a belief."

If He's angry at me then I would hope He'd let me know. Just like if my girl was angry at me. Else the problem would not get resolved and likely escalate into something worse.
