A Chinese primary school teacher and a beautician have filed a suit against CNN in New York over remarks they say insulted the Chinese people and are seeking $1.3 billion in compensation -- $1 per person in China, a Hong Kong newspaper reported.

The case against the Atlanta-based cable channel, its parent company Turner Broadcasting and Jack Cafferty, the offending commentator, comes after 14 lawyers launched a similar suit in Beijing alleging that Cafferty's remarks earlier this month violated the dignity and reputation of the Chinese people.

Cafferty said the United States imported Chinese-made "junk with the lead paint on them and the poisoned pet food" and added: "They're basically the same bunch of goons and thugs they've been for the last 50 years."

CNN said Cafferty was expressing an opinion about the Chinese government, but the Foreign Ministry demanded an apology and accused the network of trying to drive a wedge between the Chinese people and leadership.

  • offensive for sure. so are lots of things going on in this world. if having a backwards and skewed opinion on cable news is worth $1.3 billion, how much is oppressing minorities, lying about WMDs, allowing genocide, fighting about religious difference, sex-trade, genetically modified foods, poisoning the atmosphere, killing animals, wars, making money off death.....
    i mean c'mon.
why are these the issues that people rally behind in such a huge way? get em either way, any way, i say.

  • if we want China to change their ways, pissing off their population is not an A+ start.
  • Does that mean we could collectively sue China over the puppies and kittens that died because of THEIR antiquated manufacturing process?

And what about the LEAD PAINT on children's toys manufactured in China that made it's way to America?

Maybe it's about time for us to care a bit more about US then about 1 Billion Chinesse that can take care of themselves???
  • This is a frivolous lawsuit that should be dismissed immediatly.

  • I thought CNN stood for Cable NEWS Network and not Cable OPINION Network or CON. Broadcasters should really have to label their programs as News or Opinion. I'm tired of news networks broadcasting divisive opinion-makers and packaging it up as news.

As for the lawsuit, it is probably over the top yes, but it does bring this issue to light.

  • china does indeed push alot of substandard crap through our borders.
and our federal government continues to give trade concessions and borrow money for war etc.
the problem though is not the chinese or the americans. the problem is human nature and greed..
the problem is lack of restraint in government.
and an unwillingness to hold corporations and profiteers who lack morales accountable.

  • haha! I loved the sign.
  • This isn't an issue, he just said something that someone didn't like If you want to talk issues there are plenty, war and healthcare just to name a few.

  • China is obsessing a little too much over what other people are saying about it. Instead of addressing its own problems, it's focussing on spin control. :(

  • Only in America could oversensitive nationalism and rabid litigiousness be combined into a 1.3 billion dollar lawsuit. I hope the presiding judge laughs at them when he tosses their case out.

  • It's lawsuits like these that make litigation and lawyers the most despised things on the planet. I hope these people end up being laughed at in court.

  • Ok so I really can't blame the guy for speaking his mind. What I think the Chinese people need to be more concerned about is the truth in what he's saying. If these were false statements about china then thy would have a right to be angry. In my opinion they can get mad after they fix the problem.

  • many of us are so bigoted that we'd rather blame them than acknowledge our own faults. US companies are the ones that bring poisonous products into our homes. our media, who direly distract us from the human rights violations we impose on the rest of the world, bombard us with "China this!" and "China that!" that we forget CNN and the Turner Conglomerate, along with Rupert Murdoch and FOX, are all, basically, the people's enemy, both Americans and Chinese.

  • so if the primary school teacher and beautician win, do they take all $1.3 billion? thats 1,299,999,999 more than every other person in China who deserves their dollar.

  • This lawsuit proves the point of those critical of China. Freedom of speech protects all opinions, even those we detest.

  • so some bozo with a lawyer will get paid to go away again...I don't agree with the comments made by the commentator but whay sue? free speech at times must be tolerated despite the lack of value in the message.

  • Shut up China! Gosh! We're tired of your poor, your tired, your ugly service, products, and civics. If you want respect, try earning it! You guys are the one fueling the stereotype of Chinese manufacturer is the cheapest labor.

  • I like the reporting of the story, but I don't agree with the idea that China can sue someone in the United States for exercising their opinions as guaranteed through the First Amendment. This is nothing more than one government trying to silence people in another country who speak out against it, and that is wrong.

  • CNN stand for Corrupted News Network
    ABC - ALL Bull Crap
    CBS - See, BS
NBC - it is not stand for No Bull Crap, it is Nothing But Crap

And for Jimmyp, the same service has been provided for the last almost 20 years. and it isnt so cheap anymore, more and more get their labors in India now. they just try to make a point, win or lose is not important.

  • Yeah I’m sorry this guy sounds just like an arrogant American who is to proud to recognize his own countries faults. Why sue CNN when you could sue Wal-Mart? Come on Wal-Mart pays substandard wages. Plus they automatically deduct money from their employees checks for rent whether or not they live in the dormitories provided. Oh yeah let’s not forget that the Chinese government is celebrating its status as number one polluter of the world. http://shanghaiist.com/2008/03/29/china_celebrate.php Yet somehow this school teachers fails to recognize this problem. Good job smart guy, I’m so glad you’re teaching the next generations to ignore their own problems and focus on what some jerk from CNN thinks. I bet he watches "The Hills" too.

  • I don’t ever remember seeing anyone sue the US from the USSR or Cuba (other communist countries). This is ridiculous.

Communists have always been an enemy of the US and we would call them a lot worse back in the day. Remember the “Evil Empire” that Ronald Regan coined?
