  • Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water.

  • Maybe a little insensitive but maybe humans shouldn't be in the water around sharks. Now the authorities are wasting time looking for this fish? If you want to swim find a pool.

  • be quiet observer, im sure that youve been to the beach before he just got dealt a bad hand

  • I can't believe it has been 50 years since the last incident.

On a side note, could global warming be affecting all animals and sea creatures in searching for food and impacting their survival?

  • Observer... you have a bigger chance of dying in a car accident on your way to the pool.

Wow, he was a retired veterinarian, swimming with a group of triathletes. How sad, and ironic, thinking about how many animals he's probably saved in his lifetime.

  • Why are they looking for the shark? Its not like it went out on a JAWS style rampage or something.

  • 50 years? That could be accurate but I recall a fatal shark attack not too many years ago off the coast of Ventura county, a few hours north of San Diego.

  • Not in Ventura County but a women did die from a shark attack on the Central Coast in Avila Beach a few years back...

Still, that being said, there are 1,000s of people in the water everyday. Shark attacks are super uncommon, but hard to get out of your mind when you're out there. You just have to remember you are not the apex predator in the water

  • When I worked for sarasota county (FL-west coast) as a lifeguard, I saw a few arial pics of the beach taken from a chopper a couple hundred feet in the air. The startling thing about the pics were the shadows in the water in between swimmers and the shore, about 15 of them, all sharks. I think people would be very surprised to find out just how close they get to sharks on a daily basis. Attacks over here are pretty uncommon too, although the frequency seems to increase the further south you go. Also AlbeeYap, its affecting*, and, are you serious? come on. seriously.

  • When your knee deep in the water, much less150 yards away from the shore, you have to remember you're in their territory. We can't hold it against sharks or other such predators when we enter their hunting grounds without proper protection. Despite all this, it's still crazy uncommon to be attacked by a shark or else it wouldn't be in the news when it happens. It's not like a car accident where there's one happening at any given moment.

  • And in nearly 50 years, how many sharks were killed by humans off the Southern California coast?
    Vierotchka
  • Humans - 1, Sharks (and Dophins) - 100000000000000. . . It's still sad for his family though.
