Saturday afternoon would usually mean a laid-back day, but in Shanghai, it still means more visa problems for most. Add that to rumors of needing an Olympic ticket to even get into the country plus a visual example of the contrast and you have a peek at what we're dealing with on a daily basis.

  • Stefan - much appreciated; is there anything you, or anyone is wondering about that I can address while I'm in Beijing? I haven't lived in the States for about 8 years now, so forget sometimes the questions people might have.

  • Never been to Beijing before, from your previous vlog about the pollution there I can't imagine who would want to live there, worst then SH smog from what it looks like.

From what I've heard, Beijing and Shanghai somewhat have a grudge against each other, both believe they are the "bigger" society in China, do you feel or get that vibe from the local Beijing folks?, is it difficult to understand their deep accent using their "tongue twisting" putongwah? Getting any "anti-western" attitude over there either?
Keep up the good work, been keepin up since shanghaishow last year and always interesting to see your vids.

It's bad...really bad, in face, am uploading a quick show getting a bit more in depth to the pollution problems right now (should be up within the half-hour). Much worse than SH, am guessing it has a lot to do with The Gobi as well as pollution.

BJ and SH are in constant rivalry - music, art, people, etc. BJ hold tighter onto the 'traditional' side while Shanghai is much more hedonistic. Kind of like American's saying that Canada is the 'quiet upstairs neighbor', I suppose. Beijing accents are quite funny, as the 'rrrrrr's' really come out strong, but it's standard Mandarin. Shanghainese is a completely different language. 'Zai Jian' is the standard way but in Shanghai it'd be 'Zai Wei'.

Per Western, or anti-Western sentiment, it's a totally different attitude up here, and understandable. Beijing is profiting from this all, so is putting on a good face, but Shanghai is different...much different.

Thanks again for following both shows!
