A fire at a mattress factory in Casablanca, Morocco's economic hub, has killed at least 55 people and injured a dozen others. The blaze on Friday morning took hold on the ground floor of the factory and quickly engulfed the four-storey building.

An eye witness, Abdellatif Khaloul, told Reuters, "I heard that many factory workers were trapped on the upper floors and cried from the windows for help". The local news association explained that "the fire spread rapidly throughout the factory because of the nature of the chemical products stored there".

The bustling coastal city of Casablanca is Morocco's leading port and the economic capital of the North African country.
