Iran demanded Sunday that Azerbaijan deliver a Russian shipment of nuclear equipment blocked at its border with Iran for the past three weeks.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini said in his weekly briefing that his country has asked the Azerbaijani ambassador in Iran to get his government "to deliver the shipment as soon as possible."

  • huh sounds kinda percurelier to me given iran's bizzare politics i wonder where this is heading
  • Gotta wonder what it would cost to get Azerbaijan to just keep it.

  • I can already see that the Bush administration is going to force us into a conflict with Iran before his term runs out. This would yield two results.

The first is that the new president (whoever that *Obama* might be) would be stuck in a wartime situation much worse than what we have seen in previous years as well as a possible draft situation. The second is that if it widens into an even larger war with maybe Syria, which could possibly allow the Bush administration to seize emergency power and extending their term indefinitely.

  • This is worrisome. Russia previously stated that it has Iran's back in the event of an attack by foreigners-namely, the U.S. And it looks like events leading up to a possible U.S. attack on Iran are picking up. This could end bad for all parties involved.

  • Yep, the campaign for making americans believe a war against Iran is needed has begun.

  • I say we hold elections early - since Nancy Pelosi refuses to impeach!

Hold general election now! Let's get Busheney and gang out of office!

Why wait? What's the point? Hold elections now!

  • WTF is this picture posted here? If Current aired this news item with that picture, it too would be complicit in promoting the unfounded propaganda that we are proof positive that Iran is developing weapons of mass destruction. A responsible, impartial, non-sensationalist journalist would show a picture such as the one linked, which is the Foreign Ministry spokesman who made the demand:

"We call on the government of the Republic of Azerbaijan to carry out the necessary measures for the delivery of the consignment to the Islamic Republic of Iran," Hosseini told the news conference.

  • Super. I'm sure that, once again, our brilliant President is on a mission to begin yet another war.

  • This doesn't look good. What kind of 'nuclear equipment' is it?

  • I still don't understand how American plans to wage a war on Iran, a country that's twice the size of Iraq and also won a war against Iraq even though we backed Saddam.

Troop enlistment is at an all time low, the troops in combat right now are are being stretched to the breaking point already, and soon there won't be enough troop strength in America to defend our country should, hypothetically, we be attacked by someone who's fed up with our international bullshit.

  • devo64:

I agree the invasion and occupation of Iran would be less than a cakewalk, if Iraq ever was. I also agree a ground-based occupation would require troop strength that does not currently exist in our voluntary services.

    Two things:

The US also helped arm Iran through its drug money for weapons clandestine program, known as the Iran-Contra Affair. Kissinger was quoted as saying, "it's a pity they [Iran and Iraq] both can't lose."

Fox News has quoted an administration source that plans are being laid that call for a possible air war against Iran after presidential candidates have been selected but before the general election. The Telegraph quotes a senior intelligence official as saying the US military has "two major contingency plans" for air strikes on Iran. "One is to bomb only the nuclear facilities. The second option is for a much bigger strike that would - over two or three days - hit all of the significant military sites as well. This plan involves more than 2,000 targets."

  • This could be a positive situation for us in the United States. With the chances of war happening in Iran in the coming years, isolating Iran would become a priority. This story shows signs of agreement about the situations in Iran between the U.S. and Russia. This also creates a division between Iran and Russia while pulling the Russians closer to our corner.

And before you choose to say things about troop enlistment at an all-time low, that we're losing the war in Iraq, or any other unfounded points, I suggest you diversify your reading instead of just repeating what you've been told on TV.

  • Damn the liberal media for reporting truthy facts like this (Associated Press 4/21/08):

Data released by a congressional committee shows the number of soldiers admitted to the Army with felony records jumped from 249 in 2006 to 511 in 2007. And the number of Marines with felonies rose from 208 to 350. Those numbers represent a fraction of the more than 180,000 recruits brought in by the active duty Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines during the fiscal year ending Sept. 30, 2007. But they highlight a trend that has raised concerns both within the military and on Capitol Hill.

The services use a waiver process to let in recruits with felony convictions, and many of the crimes were committed when the service members were juveniles. "Waivers are used judiciously and granted only after a thorough review," said Pentagon spokesman Lt. Col. Jonathan Withington. He added that "a protracted war on terror, a decline in propensity to serve, and the growing reluctance of parents, teachers and other adults to recommend young people go into the military, has made recruiting a major challenge".

Neither the Army nor the Marines met their original recruiting goals for 2007 or 2008 and cash and educational tuition "incentives" continue to be raised in order to increase more individuals into signing up for the military or for convincing current service members to re-enlist.

  • How is this surprising? Putin's been up to this not-so-under-the-table deals with countries in the Middle East for years. Its about time we really start paying attention to it.

  • i doubt russia and iran are any cosier together than russia and the rest of europe, they've had various disputes in the past, most recently who gets gas field contracts and whether most of europe will allow american sanctions to affect their deals. irans considering taking the gas to the east. as for the wars iran would be very messy, i'd say the yanks need a draft to invade, and a peace in afghanistan. iran wont lose a fight easily, alot of blood will be spilled by two very proffesional armies. besides even if the yanks did get the first airstrikes, the iranians have faught on against iraq with insufficient support and supplies.
iraq is likely to remain a war zone and advanced base
due to the corperate involvement with the green zone, the rest of the country and its government. lastly theres no consistent outcome to the battles in iraq, and logical methods of interacting with the locals are
not going to stop violence however much it was neeeded.
