Cool!
I am hoping to grow my own produce this summer..the ice has finally melted in Maine..this looks very cool for those with limited space! We are such an ingenious species..too bad it is often directed at killing and suppressing people instead of solving problems like this more often.

Pretty darn cool. As things start building up, we may need to think about those flying cars after all.

..and the Farmer's Market underneath!!
I just went to LA and if it anything like their's it is an experience..imagine!
..and incidentally...we happened to see Jeff from Curb your Enthusiasm shopping there with his child. That was a thrill for me since I am a fan and we never see anyone in Maine who is famous..-

I wouldn't want to be on the level beneath the livestock.
-
is it just me, or did they design put-put into levels 9 10 and 11?
-
They did! It's for alternating crops rather than leaving the levels fallow!
-
Of course, a design like this would limit the kinds of plants one could use because of the lack of sun light. Likely no more then eight hours, if your lucky.
-
I love this...but being realistic (man, sometimes I hate that word...there's such a fine line between realism and cynicism) a building that houses a hotel (as one of the other entries does) would bring in much more income (and hence, more taxes) than a farm. and we all know that people are gonna follow the dollar sign....
but the concept is wonderful and hopefully will be utilized somewhere at some point....people in Asheville, NC would love it.... -

the retrofitting proposal by daekwon park is a great symbiotic solution btwn the demand for skyscraper construction and environmental sustainability. i like how the modules create a network of opportunities for landscaping and wind turbines. ...would've been even cooler if the modules included pods where you could charge up your electric car.
-
how smart is that? that helps on so many levels, lower food prices due to less shipping, could reduce traffic since less trucks will be needed to get food from place to place and less emissions, also the food will be fresher!
-
Truly amazing. Let's see a global race to get the first one up and running. No losers. Everyone gets a trophy.
-
word, not starving is the dopest trophy ever!)

It seems the cost to build this would cause the food to be overly expensive to offset the high expense of construction.

This is awesome. Saves space, saves money, saves the environment. I'm just wondering how will the farmers run their machines?

OMFG this is Great! I have been pushing the idea of High-Rise Hydroponic Buildings for a long time. I notice that the ideas here are mainly dirt, however the use of water would lessen the weight on each floor of the building and the benefits of doing our farming is not limited to the retiring of pesticides and and other harmful measures used in our current archaic farming methods but it also allows for the recollection of evaporated water to be reused which is ever so important with the loss of water due to global warming. Speaking of global warming it also takes away the worry of climate changes that may otherwise affect our ability to produce food. This is also a way to save fuel as we would not have to transport our food stuffs all over the world. These buildings could also be build adjacent to Biofuels processing plants and grow things like soybeans which require very little over head space and make excellent Biofuel. Also the carbon sequestered from power plants whether they be coal or biofuel could be used to feed the plants in these farms and in return the oxygen produced pumped back into our atmosphere. Then the UN can stop making dangerous accusations that the production of Biofuel is pushing the global food crisis. Instead of asking why all the major powers of the world are stockpiling food. But I digress, in regards to what the farmers will do they will ether work/lease at these High-Rise farming centers or I hope some would return there land to its natural state and perhaps make money through some carbon offsetting trade or just from allowing others to observe nature as she was meant to be. While it may seem utopia n in a way I would like to see this technological revolution in energy production and living standards allow us to live with the luxury s and safety granted us by our technology but also to allow the wildness and grandeur of nature to take hold again. Allowing us humans to do as we have always wished separate ourselves from nature without destroying it in the process.

Great idea! This is exactly what I was thinking about for my herb farm, but a smaller version. This one looks huge!

global_problems, these proposals ARE within reach. the problem is that most property owners of large sites are going to be more likely to invest in shopping malls or office buildings than they will be in structures that are both creative and sustainable.
...also, if a client is willing to invest in a project like this, he/she will undoubtedly hire a worthy structural engineer to ensure its structural integrity. -
some species (as the cabagge) absorb the atmospheric deposit ( gabagge are sometime use for air quality monitoring) .
So for food production...-

yes poeple may want to invest in this but, instaed of spending millions of dollars on this maybe we should be spending the money on education.... or the children that are dieing in the world!!!!

global_problems:
...your concerns are valid, though your priorities aren't in order. yes, education is something not to be overlooked, however, if we don't make an effort to climb out of the environmentally UNconscious crater that we continue to fall blindly or push each other into, education, unfortunately, will be positioned quite low on our massive 'to do' list.
the earth's health is waning. ...you can't expect a tree to grow in tainted soil, just as much as you can't expect future generations to thrive in a polluted and unattended environment. -
tingaling:
yes but who is to fault, more than like people like you who think just talking about it and not doing your part to help the enviroment. Don't judge me because of my priorities, i do my bit. im in a full time volenteer job to help the enviroment. i recycle i even pick up waste off the floor and put it in the bin. im a good person so dont judge me.
i beleive at the moment education in wales is very important. im from wales and if everyone cared more like wales does about the community instead of trying to build the next shopping centre or fast food restaurant then the place would be a lot healthier. and there would be a lot more greener feilds ... like wales!!!!-

i wasn't judging you. i was merely trying to bring the bigger picture to light. i don't consider myself to be at fault for stating my point of view.
also, like you, i do my part in helping the environment as well. i'm not just talking about it.
no need to be offended, we're essentially on the same side. -
This is plain awesome! One more reason to live in New York!
