Ever wanted to place a call and hear the sound of a glacier melting? For the next 2 months you will be able to do just that thanks to Scottish artist Katie Paterson.

Go to her site to listen to a pre-recorded track or dial +44 (0)7757001122 to hear it live.

"The project, which involved sinking a waterproof microphone in Vatnajökull’s glacial lagoon, Jökulsárlón, attached to a mobile phone set to auto-answer and an amplifier on land, was first presented for a week in June 2007. Due to its immense success – around 3,200 calls from 47 different countries and states (from Poland to Palestine) were received – Paterson is running the project again, this time extending it to two months."

  • wow for a second I thought there were cellphones/landfill/ice style buried in the north (my mind runs randomly), but after reading the article, what a highly depressing sad symphony that must be to hear.

  • I listened. It is a very sad sound to hear and also, alarming. When are people going to wake up and take action?

You should take action right now. Small thing . . . turn off your computer and sit in the dark. Big thing . . . see if you can somehow stop the Earth's orbit around the Sun. If it weren't for that, we'd never have to hear glaciers melt.

  • Two thumbs up for this project. Wonderful artistic way to bring attention to a critical problem..

  • The idea of glacier speak is brilliant...the actual recording is a tiny bit repetitive (the glacier's a yakhead), but giving voice to huge melt is genius.
