How bout that you ask? i think it proves that they are very intelligent animals who know how to mimic things they see, we already knew that.

  • Woot! Go Orangutan! Evolving and hunting those yummy fishy fish!

  • I don't see why this shocks anyone. As if humans are the only species with the ability of trial and error.

  • I always wondered why the rest of the primates never made it over the evolutionary hump...

  • all we need to do is teach him to speak and shave him. Then he could be the republican candidate for 2012.

Well, just because this one failed, doesn't mean that his successors will. We could be looking at a new sentient species, if greedy assholes stop poaching.

I'm not surprised, we already know they can drive cars and flip off authority figures.

  • This is truly amazing.
Another one of infinite reasons we all need to band together to save our precious planet and every one of its wondrous creatures. I am so scared that we have damaged it beyond repair. I am scared the ice caps are too far melted and the fresh water will kill massive numbers of our whales and dolphins and other dear animals.

GO VEGAN if you can to make a great immediate impact without much pain..even if it is partly Vegan have a steak or cheese a few times a week if you want. Plant your own garden and share it with neighbors. I see so many cars whizzing by me constantly on my bike and walking..empty buses ...do people need to drive large SUV's to walk on exercise machines so often? Why not walk out of your homes if you can?
Al Gore says we are not doing enough...we owe this to our children and subsequent generations.

  • It doesn't surprise me that the orangutan has excellent surviving skills, but the picture was a great shot!

  • The orangutan pictured is just one of hundreds living at the Nyaru Menteng Orangutan Rehabilitation Center, which is operated by the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation in Borneo (Indonesia).

Kaja is a small island in the middle of the Rongan River where several dozen orangutans are living until they can be released back into a safe section of the rainforest. The problem is that due to the unchecked spreading of palm oil plantations, the forest is being cut down and orangutans are being slaughtered. This orangutan, like the 650 others at Nyaru Menteng, is an orphan. He watched as his mother was murdered and his forest home was destroyed.

You can see him and the others on the series "Orangutan Island' on Animal Planet.

Because of deforestation by the palm oil industry, orangutans are predicted to be extinct in the wild in less than 10 years. To learn more about orangutans and how to help them, please visit the Orangutan Outreach website at redapes.org.

  • Freaking awesome.
Primates have been seen using tools before though; Chimps know to prod termite mounds with sticks to get a tasty snack, and can also understand languages formulated for them by using symbols that represent words.
This display of intelligence is not necessarily new, but the image just looks really cool.

  • Let's just hope they don't pick up on the poaching too
