Police in Mozambique think they have a 'license to kill,' says Amnesty International

Human rights group Amnesty International published a report accusing police in Mozambique of 'killing and torturing people with impunity.' Police are allegedly responding to crimes often with lethal force though rarely face criminal proceedings. The claims come days after Mozambique's human rights league has said the humanitarian situation in the country has deteriorated this year. Amnesty recommended urgent action be taken to address this seeming lack of police accountability, to bring police codes to international standards.

According to the BBC, police have refused to comment on the Amnesty report.

    • oh man, idk i mean there is A LOT of corruption in America its just different from the corruption in Africa, with America's corruption its almost always about money, and how they can get more of it no matter who it hurts, and every second of the day it gets worse, America is on a path of collapsing i don't know if i will see it collapse but if things keep heading the way they are i cant see America going past another 25-50 years without completely collapsing. I do agree Africa would be better off with Americas corruption because there would be a lot less senseless deaths.

    • True, but at least if the level of corruption in African's government can be reduced to the level of corruption in America, then we would be in better shape :-D

    • "justwannafindmytrue" that is the question on the minds of many Africans; I'm Nigerian, and I'm constantly asking myself why the hell we can seem to get our act together... what is it in the mentality that causes us to continue down in a destructive path. The government in Mozambique, as well in other African countries that are going through difficulties, has to change first. They are the ones supposed to be leading their people, and when they are stuck in their corruptive rutt, how can the citizens expect the police to be any different.

I lived in Lagos growing up and the situation there wasn't very different. At night, you don't dare stop when "Police officers" pull you over because the police officers would give their uniforms to robbers who would pull you over and rob you blind.

Once armed robbers came to our street, blocked it off and spent an entire night robbing house after house. The police that we call at midnight didn't show up till the next morning.

Corrupt police officers are that way because the government isn't very different!

    • The situation can never truly be addressed if the general public feels they are being hunted down. This type of mentality continues both sides to act in a manner which is digressive. As tasidude put it "i would do anything to stay alive", as will the police and the public.

Real solutions need to be addressed and people should be held accountable, in a lawfully correct way, for the crimes they commit; police or not.

Some of you may question what is lawfully correct as it is in any situation a very broad statement. My definition of what is a correct and not correct may differ from yours as yours may differ from that which I hold to be acceptable. These officers however are far from what should be acceptable.

    • no offense to anybody but if i had to be a cop in any impovershed country that was notorious for violence and war, i would do any thing to stay alive, except kill people for petty crimes.
