57% of senior executives in the media and entertainment industries view user-generated content as one of the top three challenges they face today. Filmed on April 19, 2008 at Podcamp DC, I interview several media makers from organizations as diverse as NPR, Porter Novelli, CNN, Harris Teeters, etc., who are creating their own content for their own niches on their own time, and foresee a future that will make traditional media obsolete.

  • I enjoyed the ample A-roll interviews. Very good information. I just wish you could cover up with a little more B-roll to make the story easier to follow and a little more interesting.

  • Thanks for sharing that blog post Andrew. I've heard that post referenced on a bunch of podcasts recently, so I was glad I got to read the real deal. Now if only I had a gin & tonic in one hand with a re-run of Gilligan's Island on in the background while I type this reply, I would have the perfect trifecta that would make up for hundreds of years of cognitive surplus!

  • Nice!!! Im glad you posted this because it shows the tension between traditional journalism and viewer-created content. The war continues....and as a journalist, i'm right in the middle.

  • Thanks Raven7! All these folks interviewed with the exception of the Produce Podcast guy work for major media, but spend most of their spare time creating their own. In fact, I've met several podcasters/media makers who used to work for major media and are now successful on their own, aka make a real living. The mobile stuff is starting to get real interesting here in the US, especially with 3G coming our way.

  • With the incredible concentration of wealth into the hands of so few people, the "hi-jacking" of mainstream media into just a few information providers is dangerous to the success of Democracy. It is only because of the techno/communciations revolution that there remains some hope that people will see the corruption in politics/big business and be able to foster reform. The life and success of Democracy will lie in the hands of those who can communicate ideas outside mainstream media.

  • Great work. I love the egalitarian marketplace of ideas that the internet has created. The cream of entertainment will rise to the top.

  • As long as we are able to keep the Internet free, we have the opportunity to take back the power of the media. For the last few decades our media has been aimed at dumbing us down and keeping us distracted. Few people realize the inherent power of the mass media. The next generation will know more about Myle Cyrus than Thomas Jefferson. And the worst part is that they won't see a problem with that.
  • This is a great piece! I agree that the current media monopoloy is dangerous. This progressive way of sharing information gives me hope for the future, and I want to be a part of it.

The difficult thing is generating interest from the average person to take it upon themselves to view progressive media, rather than the mainstream media which is so quick, easy, and comfortable.

  • well I think the problem lies with the wall between editorial and advertising...if we dont keep a barrier between the people paying for the content (the advertisers) and the people supplying it to us (the news-stations, papers, magazines etc) we arent going to truly get the real "news." Would a station like FOX or CNN really want to report on something negative that one of their sponsors has done? Not if they want to continue doing what they do...As far as Im concerned, it donesnt matter where the news is coming from, traditional or new media...its still going to be tainted so long as the process of getting the news to us remains (advertisers still supply it...the internet is free to you and I because of the advertisers)...I dont want to sound too negative because I dont feel that new is really tainted that much, but its possible...
