US preparing to strike Iran

Tuesday, Defense Secretary Robert Gates sent a second aircraft carrier to the Persian Gulf to “remind” Iran the US is ready to strike if sufficiently provoked.

"What the Iranians are doing is killing American servicemen and women inside Iraq," said Secretary of Defense Robert Gates. Gates also insisted that Iran continues to back the Taliban.

The recent weeks have seen an increase in criticism toward Iran’s alleged support of the Taliban and efforts to supply militants in Iraq. Military commanders in Baghdad are expected to roll out evidence of that support soon - including date stamps on newly found weapons caches showing that recently made Iranian weapons are flowing into Iraq at a steadily increasing rate.

Gates’ comments contrasted with those from Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who said last week that he had not seen any new signs of Iranian support for the Taliban.

Later this week Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki is expected to confront the Iranians with evidence of their meddling and demand a halt. If that doesn't produce results, the State Department has begun drafting an ultimatum that would tell the Iranians to knock it off - or else.

  • Yes, they are going to attack Iran using the same kind of lies as last time. Thank you General Petraeus, I knew you would do it. Yes, State Department tell them to give up their WMD like Iraq had, or we will bomb your nuclear power plants and destroy the GD world. Thank you Nancy Off The Table Pelosi.

  • It is a FACT that Iranian-made weapons and munitions are being supplied to terrorists/insurgents in Iraq. So do you believe that we should just sit back and ignore that fact? Or can you live with a nuclear Iran who hates the West and just might supply terrorists with these nukes as well? Don't be so naive to think if we should sit back and shut up they won't do any harm to us. Am I calling for war? No. If Iran is serious about being on the global stage, then they need to realize that acting in such a way they have been is not the right way to do things.

  • TBone5284, No it is not a known fact. According to our intelligence community. This exactly the kind of lies they told about Iraq when the inspectors in Iraq were saying no. This is going to do more than just piss other countries off, we are going to get retribution lobbed back in our laps. Other countries have warned us not to attack, they are dead serious. Our military is stretched to the breaking point, we will get our asses kicked if they do this.

  • Getting back onto the topic of preparing to strike Iran... I have to ask with what forces? Our troops are already spread thin and being constantly recalled for more tours of duty. On top of that recruitment is at an all time low, you know its kinda hard to get volunteers to line up for an immoral war. Looks to me like Bush is either planning to initiate the draft or he is trying to set up the next president for one hell of a cleaning job.

  • I believe he plans to use nuclear bombs. Saudi Arabia told their citizens about a month ago to get prepared for fallout because the US is going to bomb Iran. Must have been what Cheney told them when he took his Middle East trip. Russia has warned us not to, and Who knows what they plan, after we attack Iran? Remember the six nuclear missiles that got sent (accidentally) to a gulf port where they ship military equipment to the Middle East? Whatever happened to them? America is busy watching American Idol...........

  • Well, lets see now....The us economy will collapse with any long term oil shortage(this doesnt take a genius to fiqure out). Iraq has a huge oil field,we want it,we NEED it...ok now in comes Iran,they do not want us in Iraq.If Iran starts producing nukes it would make securing the oil fields impossble.....So bomb Iran and take your chances with Russia or let your country collapse..what would you do. Our goverment is going to do what they must to survive,like it or not!
