People of Lesbos sue gay group over term "Lesbian"

Three people from the Greek island of Lesbos are suing the gay rights group, Homosexual and Lesbian Community of Greece. They say that while they don't have anything against gay women, the name insults native islanders' identity -- they're also known as Lesbians.

  • Shouldn't they be suing Sappho? There are gay women everywhere, they are only called Lesbians because of her. That's where the term came from, it was her fantasies that made it apply to that island, so it's her responsibility for the insult.

    ...Now who is insulted? Orthodoxy("right"hand) needs to wake up!! Humans have more than 1hand.Greek Christianity water down the fuck out of Greek culture(Sparta,Alexander the"great" anyone)and put a footnote in the "history" books claiming that anything that isn't "hetero"(term didn't exist then)was just a phase of culture before Christianity(few hundred years to write a book, the hypocrisy of "saint" Thomas acquintis in the 500's and anti queer sentiment in the 1100's,crusades..and so forth).So the only reason the "native"islanders are insulted is there own lack of ability to evolve past centuries of religious persecution and DOGMA..

  • All they need to do is to change the definition of natives and inhabitants of Lesbos from Lesbian to Lesbese, and voilà, problem solved!

  • I agree it's a waaaay better solution, but naaaah they'd never go for it, since it's too simple.

    Plus where's the money in it? That way they can't get anything out of the other groups.

  • The term Lesbian comes from Lesbos and described both the inhabitants of Lesbos and the sexual orientation.

  • That's quite a funny story really. I didn't realize the term "lesbo" had legitimate roots.

    Reminds me of a fashion store chain we have in Ireland that changed it's name from GayWear to A-Wear in the 80's when that word took on new meaning.
