Underage Disney branded sex symbols are nothing new

The May issue of Vanity Fair hits newsstands tomorrow, but it's already made the cover of the New York Post. The issue features a photograph of Miley Cyrus, star of the Disney Channel's mega-hit Hannah Montana, clutching a satin sheet to her otherwise naked torso. Cyrus quickly disavowed the photograph, which was taken by Annie Liebovitz.

But this whole scandal reminded Slate.com author Daniel Brook of an ad he had seen while on a reporting trip to China a few months back.

"I was walking from my Beijing bed-and-breakfast to a nearby subway station when I was stopped in my tracks by a billboard that made the controversial 1990s Calvin Klein underwear ads look artistic by comparison. Staring down at the throngs of shoppers on Beijing's Xinjiekou Nandajie Avenue, a busy commercial thoroughfare about a mile west of the Forbidden City, was a white girl who looked all of 12, reclining in a matching bra-and-panties set adorned with Disney's signature mouse-ear design. In a particularly creepy detail, the pigtailed child was playing with a pair of Minnie Mouse hand puppets. In the upper left-hand corner was the familiar script of the Disney logo."

Oh Disney, U just bein' Miley!

  • ...damned shame.

  • That picture is creepy. Little girls should not be on billboards in their undies. However, the matching set is cute. Where can I get one?

  • The Fed's are gonna bust down my door any minute for looking at that.

    /ECK!
  • Bad move by billy ray - but one should always be careful with fatherly advice from a man with a double rednecked name.

The Annie Liebovitz pics look like Miley just had sex, all hot and bothered looking. Her parents should be ashamed for being stupid but shouldn't Annie be prosecuted for child pornography? Isn't the photographer liable here for any damage to Miley's reputation and or career?

    Scary.

  • ughh...you know a girl in underwear shouldn't be creepy...it's the fact that it's sexualized for sale which makes it so chilling.

  • I find this more telling than disgusting. disgusting for sure but much more telling. I really dont think this Is the problem as much as it is the product of the problem. Girls all over the place are doing this. Have you been to a junior high school pep rally. The cheerleaders are dressed the same as the pros, 20 years older. Kids on disney and other programs are always dressed to be sexually appealing. Its sad and f'd up. But its a sad and f'd up world. So much so that I wasnt even shocked when I saw the picture. What have we come to?

What have you come to? I was playing with my niece when i saw that and it seriously disturbed/shocked/grossed the hell out of me.
  • This is both frightening and a sign of what is going on in our society. I have watched Current and read many postings but this one has urged me to register and reply. I am frustrated that many people in this world, including the parents that allowed this photo, would simply walk on by and never take notice of this disgusting prod for higher sales. There should be some regulations, laws that protect these young children from companies who want to sell them sexually and their own parents who want a piece of the money. What disgusts me just as much as the attire is the manner in which they have the child posed, it is comparable to an adult's lingerie catalog pose, just with puppets to soften the shock. Sorry Disney the puppets didn't work!

  • That's way past any line...as a photographer, I cannot imagine anything but getting into a fight witht the ass that defends making money off this shoot...

  • I'm not defending making money on young, soft porn. But I'm here to tell you that the original news report of this, (Miley Cyrus photo)is just here so you all won't be discussing the US bombing Somalia. (that has happened for the last several months) Did you KNOW we are bombing Somalia? Did you KNOW we maybe would BE bombing Somalia regardless which political party we back?

Be very careful who you back in the next general election. If we just get a Dems version of the same behavior, I'm not pleased with the concept. I think we need a NEW person with NEW ideas.

Apperently you misunderstood. What im saying is that this is happening everywhere. T.v. Movies and pep rallys. Kids want to grow up and be like brittany spears and paris hilton. And no one really sees a problem with that. What I"m saying, Analogue4Digital, Im not as disgusted by the photo as much as im disgusted by the fact that nobody has been paying attention, which has allowed to let this problem to get so carried away. Rember a few years ago when junior high school cheerleaders where dancing sexually to that barby girl song. I was 15 and i knew there was a problem. So I repeat my question. What have WE come to?
