I just started riding my bike back to work after a 4 month long hiatus. I believe that if you are healthy and in reasonable shape (and own a bike) there should be no reason not to commute anywhere within 10 miles of your home.
-
I've been peddling (sorry...had to) this idea for over 20 years since I gave up driving. It's good for you and great for the environment.
-
Back home I would see this one guy in his 60s ride his bike to work every single day. It's a good habit to get into, especially if you really aren't going very far.
-
Too bad I can't ride a bike. Yes, yes, and I can't swim either, and I've lived in Miami all my life.
-
Around Boston, it's like a chain reaction- everyone is hopping on their bike and with good reason! It's fun, free, clean, and limitless!

Yeah I need to get a bike, I live about 20 minutes away from work. I can do that for about a month after the 15th..... I'm in shape already but it will definitely send a message to the Oil Company's.... LOL

Bike to work day is to narrow a title, but I guess it will have to do because I can't see any other name that could work.
Also don't forget to equip your bike with the appropriate gear. By this I mean if you're in Western Washington like I am, you might want to have fenders an a headlight and taillight on your bike because of the occurrence of early morning fog & the highly likely chance of rain.
Also carry the things you need for work in a back pack NOT a shoulder bag as wearing one makes the ride VERY difficult. and cover the pack with large heavy duty trash bag to prevent it from getting wet and such.
Depending on how far you have to ride you might consider wearing biking shorts/pants to prevent your legs from chaffing from the amount of pedaling you'll do, and don't worry you can wear them under your normal pants/shorts.
If you are wearing pants make sure the part of your pants near the cuff are either tucked into your socks or tight/close against your legs so the won't get pulled into the turning gears by the pedals and end up shredded
Wear biking gloves or any kind of gloves for that matter so you can grip the handles better, because after a while your hands will start to get sweaty after gripping the rubber of the handles for so long
Make sure you have a good well-fitting helmet that has been in fewer then 5 crashes where the helmet got hit. That way it will be able to protect you better -
Geez Ogaal! LOL. I thought all you needed was good balance.
-
I would, but I work from home! :) At least for now, and soon, I'll be commuting to work about 20-plus miles from home. Metro and Sound Transit works great for the commute, and hopefully, interim sleeping on the bus when folks aren't chatting on their mobile phones. LOL! However, biking is a great way to go for many folks in cities like SF, Portland and Seattle. Enjoy!

Great marketing scheme built on the "feel good" angle.
It gives those who need that "I made a difference" desire a fix.
Don't believe me? See how many Free giveaways are corporate sponsored that day.
All geared for the "one day rider"...
I am 35 and have never owned an auto. I ride a bike everywhere. 24/7 365
The last 10yrs in Colorado.
Be prepared folks because my choice of transportation may soon be the masses only "choice" to get around...
How much will a mile be worth to you then?
Good luck... -
1percent, that's awesome that you bike everywhere. Way to go! "Feeling good" and "making a difference" all need to start somewhere, and bike to work day is a great example of that. The more people bike one day, the more will bike the next day. It's great that you bike every day. You never know how many people might see you and then take out the bike themselves. The world works in mysterious ways, but humans are notorious followers, and setting a good example goes a long way when you're talking about humans, compared to say, snakes. Snakes don't care if you ride a bike.

I biked to work a good 2 months or so last year, starting on bike to work week last year.
Now I work 30 miles away, not gonna happen.
I still bike around town though! -
Hey SF bikers - can you do us all a favor and actually obey the rules of the road? Feel free to stop at stop signs so that you can avoid the regular brushes with death and create unsafe conditions for everyone on the road. Those of us on MUNI don't always enjoy the bus having to swerve in order to narrowly miss your dumbass.
