A recent surge of seemingly endless earthquakes in Nevada over the past two months have seismologists puzzled as they try to determine whether the quakes indicate more activity to come.

  • have you seen "Tremors"? Call Kevin Bacon!

  • Wow, if you look at this USGS map of the Reno area, the cluster of quakes is pretty striking.

  • i hate reno with an unbridled passion. let it fall in. too bad it wasn't LA.

Mom is coming round to put it back the way it oughtta be

  • Hmm, i don't believe this, but it's kind of interesting what the Bible could suggest about these natural disasters. My mother and a few of my friends insist that these are signs of the end of the world. Talks about it in Revelation.

  • Hmm, these are kind of small so far, I think when we start seeing swarms of > 7.0 magnitude earthquakes - then we can start getting Biblical ;)

  • hahaha, i'm going to have to agree with you. Hopefully these "tremblers" arent foreshocks....because if they are, the Apocalypse is com'n!!! lol

  • Hey why all the hate for Reno? Well I don't exactly like either and I live here (fortunately only until I'm done with school). Anyway these earthquakes aren't anything to worry about. I'll start to worry when the earthquakes hit 6.0 and above.

  • McGaspa,

You should read up on Saint Faustina.
In one of her visions Jesus told her that one day
all light would go out..the Sun, Moon & Stars will just stop giving off light.

Then, a great white Cross will stand in the sky for a while and this will be the time of Divine Mercy. Whoever will say the Chaplet of Divine Mercy at this time (you can say it now too) will be able to enter into heaven.

After the Cross disappears, Jesus will come as Just Judge.
  • I live in the So Cal area where we have had our fair share of earthquakes-Northridge still plays out in my head!
Anyway, before that particular 'big one' there really were no fore shocks! Just the main shock!
Earthquakes suck, but if you live in the areas with them, you are prepared!

  • So California is finally going to fall off into the ocean.

  • reno is a dump! did you know reno is so close to hell you can see sparks.

  • wah wah wah. lame joke. As for California falling into the ocean that isn't too cool. It would be cooler if it just floated off and became an island.

  • I wouldn't rule out the depletion of oil and changing water flow patterns as factors.

  • Reno and its plagues this year does seem newsworthy...flooding, quakes, fires. What's next? Ah...it's all publicity stunts, isn't it...Little town wants to make big. Well you're going to have do better in the nightmare department, Reno, if you want that kind of attention! Try some nuclear explosions...or maybe some locust swarms. Enough of this small potatoes disaster a day fame attempt!

  • we need Christopher Walken to plant a nuclear device in the San Andreas and Hayward fault line and set us free of that dump. even though i love Arnold, think he's doing great work and that he should be president, i still hate that damn state

  • Reno is an area that was heavily mined. Most of those mines have been closed for close to a century. I would look to the old mines to see if they are on the verge of collapsing or if some of them have already collapsed.

That would explain the close to the surface earth quakes.

I don't know of any mines that are directly under Reno, but I am fairly certain that a city near Reno once collapsed into the earth due to mining under the city.

  • Thanks for the site digitrash. Puts the quakes in perspective and up to date.

  • I was born in and grew up in Reno. The map is particularly interesting. The northern half of the quake zone is where my brothers and I used to go hiking. There are only a few small abandoned mine sites there and I seriously doubt that there is a connection.

I have lived in Southern California for 25 years which I would bet is longer than some of the Reno haters have been out of diapers. I assume such because such vehement hatred is so juvenile. I have been a bit disappointed at the direction growth has taken over the years. Regardless the people and the place have their redeeming qualities.

It is an unusual place, at the edge of the desert and the foot of the Sierras. Within an hour in any direction is wonder not to mention diverse activities. My luck in growing up there was learning to snow ski and water ski the same year...1961...I was eleven. I have climbed "Lover's Leap," rafted and fished the Truckee River, eaten a 5 star dinner at two in the morning with my beautiful young bride, hiked alone in the mountains west of Tahoe, been snorkeling in Donner Lake and Tahoe, waterskied on Tahoe and Pyramid lakes, and it goes on and on.

To those who hate the area i would suggest you get to know it a little better and expand your horizons. This sort of myopic bigotry is at the source of an awful lot of human conflict.

Thanks for the memories. I really liked writing this.
