This is an intimate mini documentary about Wade Spann. Wade is a Marine Corps veteran who was wounded in Iraq when his vehicle drove over an IED (Improvised Explosive Device). He suffers from TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury). Despite having to deal with problems associated with TBI such as short term memory loss, Wade is currently a full-time student at The George Washington University. Whether you oppose the War in Iraq or think we should stay, Democrat or Republican, this is an important piece to watch. See what a brave Marine Corps veteran has to say. Produced by Julie Hyman. Directed by Julie Hyman and Alex Holt. Filmed and Edited by Alex Holt. Check it out in full HD at http://vimeo.com/960240... It was really shot in HD but I can't seem to upload it in a way that does it any justice.

Good interview Alex, Julie. Now that you've got such a great story on tape you can really play with how you tell it. I like cutting to the ritual march with taps playing. How else could you heighten your subject's story?

The people who wrote those things on the ground, weren't directing their protest at these soldiers, but at the administration's policies.
He needs to understand that.
It was a horrible thing he was put in - it's too bad the government he trusts, or trusted put him there.
Although, I have sympathy for him, he hasn't a clue why the US is there, the ramifications of it, the morality of it, the cost of it, etc.
I hope the documentary isn't pro war and addresses the issues he is raising.
This war is a horrible thing and a stain on America. The leaders that sent him there will FOREVER go down in history as an evil person. That includes those who have helped him and contributed to it from Wolfowitz to Rumsfeld to Rice.-

As the filmmaker, I'm going to keep my opinions to myself... the mini-doc seems pro-war because it is his story, but if this did get turned into a longer piece I assure you it would have different voices from both sides. However, I must point out three things just to clear Wade's name because maybe the film did not do a good enough job at showing this, and I do feel the need to portray a person's beliefs accurately:
Wade is very intelligent and well aware of the issues and ramifications surrounding the war. Have you been to Iraq? He has, and so at the very least his opinion should be considered... so should yours, but don't discount him just because he agrees we need to stay there. He is no jarhead, he thinks for himself.
Secondly, Wade never justifies the US invading Iraq. He justifies us staying there now. Wade is most worried about the people or Iraq, and he believes that if we leave the Iraqi people will suffer sectarian death on a scale that many consider genocide.
Third, I do think the film accurately addresses why Wade was upset with what was written down in chalk, and so I don't feel the need to respond to it.
I really appreciate your post though and would like it if more people put up posts like yours. The mini-doc isn't intended to change people's minds, it's just meant to make them think, and spark further discussion with this information in mind.
Thanks for the post!-
