A man, incensed that a 6-year-old girl chose to walk through a path reserved for upper caste villagers, pushed her into burning embers, police in north India said Wednesday. She was seriously burned.
The girl is a Dalit, or an "untouchable," according to India's traditional caste system.
India's constitution outlaws caste-based discrimination, and barriers have broken down in large cities. Prejudice, however, persists in some rural areas of the country.

That makes my skin crawl. My daughter is 8 yrs old. 6 wasn't that long ago. I can't imagine that man's insanity.

This is sickening. Religion has nothing to do with this, this is based on classism, from the hate and scorn generated by discrimination. Discriminination is a virus spread among people often from past generations fueling complexes of superiority, hate, and fear into the next. There's really no justification for it; discrimination is the harbringer of injustice.
There is only one true race, one true people on this earth, and it is human. We are all created equal.-

in 2008. They have a lot of "waking up" to do.

In 2008, we all have a lot of "waking up" to do.

knightlynight200, Religion or not, it is simply inhumane to push a 2nd grader into a fire because of an outlawed, outdated belief based on nothing but social discrimination. Clearly Indians in other parts of the country have realized this, there's no reason any exceptions should be made for people living in more rural areas.

People can be cruel.

What a mind-fuck the term "untouchable" is. But group bullying like this seems to pop up everywhere. It seems pretty similar to the integration battles of civil disobedience here in the US. Little girls were fair game then, too. Clearly, humans are genius at justification...we can justify anything, no matter how evil. We just have to be as good at dismantling the machine, not accepting seemingly sane rationales for insane behavior.

It's a shame that social class is regarded in such a way that you can not even view a child as a child. All you see is what you were taught to see.

D18: Group bullying? How do you think W got elected? Although much more subtle than the burning of an innocent child, the coercion of the "religious" right into electing the most incompetent president in history will continue to have worldwide implications for decades. "Group thinking" and apathy will put McCain into the white house. Complaining on the internet but neglecting to go to the polls in November will seal our fate.

And here I was thinking the caste system was obsolete. Thank you India for showing me my ignorance.

This is so wrong. It makes me really think about what we have in America. What can people do to help people like this.

What's even worse in my mind is that I get so outraged reading stories like this that I think (forgive me!) that Bush's egomanical goal of civilizing the "savages" isn't an entirely crazy idea.
Granted Bush is insane and obviously the execution of his grand civilization scheme was a cluster-fuck -- but on the other hand that doesn't mean there isn't a tiny, tiny morsel of credit to his idea.
On the one hand we can say, "Who are we to judge another culture?" - but on the other hand, well, let's just say I can definitely see why ordinary people might think that conquering Iraq and making it a "better" place was a good idea. -
That's ridiculous!

Discrimination is human nature and has been through proven different courses of evolution. The only way to get rid of it is to get rid of those who instill it through our lives. There are many sources and it will be tough, it will just be left up to time and for the human race to wake up and stop acting like crabs in a bucket.

yeah, cast system working out great for you isn't it india...
and people here still bitch about slavery for a few hundred years...try thousands of that -
What a sicko. Reminds me of only a few yearsago, a little British girl was burned to death because a gang of men thought she was a 'witch'.
-
The guy who did the pushing should be jailed for a long time. Ridiculous. Come on, people. EVOLVE!
-
Kharma comes to those who believe in this caste system. How horrible for this child to be treated this way. This man awaits his fate.
-
Bad karma man.

Religion breeds ignorance. Sad and repulsive.

This is unthinkable. Alot of us on this Internet would be in jail or dead because as a parent, after saving our child, we would most definantly go after the coper.
You heard me. Religious is not good enough reason to push a baby into an active fire.
God, this world with these rules need help. I know the guy that done that is going to get off. Then when she turns 10, they probably marry her off to a 50 year old.-
