"On Tuesday, a Michigan court released yet another batch of romantic text messages sent between Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and his former chief of staff Christine Beatty in 2002 and 2003. In the messages, Kilpatrick and Beatty—who are charged with perjury for denying their affair in court—professed their love to one another and graphically described their sexual encounters. If you delete an old text message, can someone (or his lawyer) still find it?"

It's weird, because persistence is now a feature of casual conversation... what I'm typing now, could possibly be around for a long long time. I guess this is why arguments can be so drawn out on Internet discussion boards - you can continually refer back to points a person made, verbatim.
My guess is that the way we view typed verbal communication will change over time. Maybe we'll start to become more tolerant to the idea that something which someone typed in the past doesn't necessarily represent them as a person today.
At the moment, it seems that we're still using the model of the newspapers - who hang, draw and quarter public figures based on what they say.
