A south London tunnel has been turned into a giant exhibition space by graffiti artist Banksy.

Murals in the Bristol artist's famous stencil style appear with work by 29 other artists in a half-mile stretch of the tunnel in Leake Street, Waterloo.

Images of Madonna kissing Britney Spears, a knife-wielding hoodie and a gameshow hostess appear alongside installations of crashed cars.

The three-day exhibition, called the Cans Festival, opens on Saturday.

  • I reckon that reports on the large £100,000+ bids that have been bid for Banksy's work, seem to have a really placatory affect on any originally subversive message. The value of the work takes precedent. I find it really sad. Maybe selling out is still a crime.

  • This is brilliant stuff! Even though Banksy gets mention in the headline and some would label him a sell out because he's been successful... If he were to have truly sold out, he wouldn't be doing this type of thing anymore. Fact is 'street art' is meant to be on the street and good on the organisers of this for keeping meaningful expressive art in the streets.

  • Now way Banksy would sell out! He wouldn't take the money! ...unless he needed a kidney maybe... O.o but hey! Leave him alone, he wouldn't just go against what he puts out there. Sure hes a person with flaws like the rest of us but hes managed to keep that iconic image... By the way... has his identity been revealed? I don't believe it when people claim to be him.
    Blah... i'm rambling.

  • i'm pretty sure that banksy is my generation's warhol.
not just because of the very obvious influence that warhol has had on banksy's style, but also because banksy's work is completely mainstream despite being @ times very challenging.

fyi Nefri banksy's been a public figure for some time now & can even be found introducing pods on current tv.

  • Banksy is so yesterday - it doesn't even matter if he's sold out - there are 10 year old kids in berlin doing stencil art , pre-pubescent girls in tokyo doing stickers and knee high urban terrorists anywhere in any city tagging everything in sight which blow him off the relevancy radar - and i can assure you that if you caught Banksy in a private moment , he would agree , unconditionally .

  • Banksy isn't cool or cutting edge, and is so 2001 blah blah - but I still think the most interesting thing about all of this is the way he/she/it went from a pretty alternative/subversive figure to bbc media darling.

  • the youth in the UK are tending towards "Chav" - making Banksy an icon is in the best interests of not only the BBC but of parliament itself - it's purely political - officially .
