"Boris Johnson is the new Mayor of London, his Liberal Democrat rival Brian Paddick conceded tonight.
The Conservative MP scored a stunning election victory to end Ken Livingstone's eight-year reign at City Hall and round off a disastrous 24 hours for the Labour Party.
After a nailbiting count, Mr Johnson was so far ahead on first-preference votes that he could not be caught by Mr Livingstone even after second preferences were taken into account.
Liberal Democrat candidate Brian Paddick was the first to concede defeat: "I think Boris Johnson didn't really want the job. Now that he has got it, that might make him a better mayor."

Wow... it's a pretty surprising result. Critics have accused him of being politically inexperienced, a clown and even racist (see Guardian link). It's also a very symbolic loss for Labour after their beating in the local elections. This has just made Gordon Brown's bad week even worse.

God help us. I have no idea how this loon even became a serious candidate.

I wanted the Liberal Democrat personally. But, in Government, Clegg and Cmeron are the same, so don't think I'm a fan of these politicians please!
But I am laughing, Labour: 24%
Lib Dem: 25%
Conserve: 44%
Last night on the news, that cockeyLabour man said with a grin as he walked along "I'm pretty confident I'll win." In a way to say, 'Yeah, right, thowes two!? Like that'lll happen!' -
Shocking!!!!!!

London is run by the Evening Standard.
When I asked them why they wouldn't vote for Ken all they had was dyslexic translations of headlines.
I realised 'the public' were stupid when I worked on a switchboard at the BBC, I didn't ever really think they were stupid enough for this.
2012 just became a much more interesting spectacle.
People I (used to) drink with vote Tory.
The last of my faith in mankind is gone. -
I am not a fan of Ken Livingston and I know he is not the most popular of people amongst London residents.
He has held together Londons infrastructure at a time when it was at breaking point.
Now the the nations capital have a bumbling buffoon to balance their budgets and deliver the olympics project. -
Just a matter of time of time before Cameron is PM
