The bill states that the federal government should "continue to carry out, coordinate, and expand research in newborn screening" and "maintain a central clearinghouse of current information on newborn screening... ensuring that the clearinghouse is available on the Internet and is updated at least quarterly.
Sections of the bill also make it clear that DNA may be used in genetic experiments and tests. In addition, all 50 states are now routinely providing these results to the Department of Homeland Security."

The only one to vote against this bill was, of course, Ron Paul.

American Zeitgiest anyone?
This is the begining of it all. National Database starts with those who cant say no-newborns. And what do newborns have to do with National Security anyway? -
Ron Paul: "I cannot support legislation, no matter how much I sympathize with the legislation’s stated goals, that exceed the Constitutional limitations on federal power or in any way threatens the liberty of the American people. Since S. 1858 violates the Constitution, and may have untended consequences that will weaken the American health care system and further erode medical privacy, I must oppose it... In fact, by directing federal bureaucrats to create a contingency plan for newborn screening in the event of a 'public health' disaster, this bill may lead to further erosions of medical privacy. As recent history so eloquently illustrates, politicians are more than willing to take, and people are more than willing to cede, liberty during times of 'emergency."

This could prevent and maybe reduce childhood diseases or better predict course to take at an early age to help with future problems. Then on the other hand how many and how long into the future will this go on? A mapping of family trees like friends connecting to friends on Facebook a database could tell you who is safe to mate with. What will this law evolve into? Much like the Social Security number used to be only used by/for the Health Department benefits now it is required for identity purposes everywhere. Another point in my opinion, this is much like taking peoples fingerprints before a crime is committed. This is one to watch.

This is the scariest thing I've seen all week.
-
I think Darwinism was supposed to take care of that. Dont get me wrong, I have all the sympathy in the world for parents who have some-how challenged children and if this can help them live more fulfilling lives, then great! However,as humans, we were born with mating instincts that we should be listening to more than any other doctrine. But in the future of this "instant" age, if we need a government map to tell us with whom we should mate, then the human race has many more problems than just the Federal Government
-
This entirely a violation of these individuals right to liberty.
-
This has its ups and downs. Realistically if we want a unified/universal health care this is just one database that will need to be started. The major down is our right to our DNA being posted for any one to look up.
But then what you hiding? genetic T-virus?!? Whats wrong with being possibly cloned by the government for testing? -
Yeah, so they'll screen these kids, use their DNA for new pharmaceuticals, and patent it. Then they'll turn around and charge us an arm and a leg to buy back what was in our own genetic code. Then, when we want a cut of all that money since it WAS our gene in their first place, we'll be denied... It's already happening, look up genetics and intellectual property rights.
NO THANKS! Talk about Big Brother, not to mention all the wacky sci-fi scenarios that could come true when they keep tinkering with what they don't fully understand.... -
I hope the ACLU is all over this one.
-
I see a lot more 'home births' in our future. Heck, I think I'd give birth in a cave to avoid the gov from getting their hands on my babies DNA.

Ah, Big Brother wants to keep tabs on your children. MMmmmuuuaaahhhhh! :(
-
Whats next? Barcodes at birth! I don't have to worry about my kid's, yet! I do believe my future grandchildren on the other hand should be born with the same rights my grandparents came to this country in search of. I hope that special HELL takes these egotistical scum real soon!
-
I think you'll start to see more and more home births if this is allowed.
-
ooh mann...
they already have my fingerprints, now they get my childrens entire being! eesh.
definately the most disturbing, yet beneficial to the legal society, thing i have heard in some time...-

This is Spartaaa? -
Yes perhaps varude, but how many Spartans are there? It will only get worse.
-
I'm very very disappointed that only one goddamn politician voted against this.
-
to think the government is trying to basically enslave Americans is crazy. We need to follow things like this and speak up when shit like this comes up. It would only be used to help people for about 10 years, then what?

DNA fingerprinting only serves to indicate the possibility of some genetic predisposition however the reality is often much different than what the genetics might suggest.
DNA fingerprinting is a way to create a national DNA database of so called "Citizens born in the US". Eventually it will be used for Identification purposes much like it was used in the film GATACA.
If you have not seen it you really should. It paints a picture of what this law will eventually lead to; discrimination based on DNA.
Even though the congress passed a law saying that you cannot be discriminated against by your DNA, you know how much protection that law will offer.
About as much as other discrimination laws do; they pay lip service to the actual behavior but there is no meat for enforcement. People still discriminate everyday. Only this time it will be covert, because the corporations that will control this data will never let on that they are actually using it to discriminate with. It will be very subtle.

Did anyone notice that this bill was sponsored by Democrats?????

You think this is scary? Read the info at the link. Here's an excerpt:
What the Homegrown Terrorism (S1959) bill does is bring back into the equation not just violent actions, and not just violent plots, but the words and ideas that may (or may not) inspire or encourage them somewhere down the road. It moves toward designating people as terrorists based not on what they do, but on what they say and what they think.
Other red flags appear in the bill's initial "findings"—among them, the charge that "the Internet has aided in facilitating violent radicalization, ideologically based violence, and the homegrown terrorism process in the United States by providing access to broad and constant streams of terrorist-related propaganda to United States citizens." "If Congress finds the Internet is dangerous, then the ACLU will have to worry about censorship and limitations on First Amendment activities," says the ACLU's Fredrickson. "Why go down that road?"
The Congress is trying to consolidate its totalitarian power by making it illegal to discuss these issues. When this bill (S1959) passes, the kind of discussion we're having here will be illegal because it may incite someone else to resist the government. The Thought Police are gearing up to shut you mouth for good, so now is the time to write to and call your Senators and tell them you oppose S1959. Otherwise, please shut up before you get arrested.-

Cosmo and Hawkmang, I have been opposed to HB1959 when it was in the house, now that it is in the Senate, I am still opposed to it.
I have been speaking out about this issue for a while and I will continue to speak out about the loss of our freedom of thought, our freedom of speech, our freedom to be critical of our government and to protest their actions.
The first amendment is the cornerstone of our society and without it, then its just not America anymore.
-
Yeah, jubal and Cosmo, that S1959 is SCARY! It should be retitled S1984. I can hear the drone now:
"War is Peace
Freedom is Slavery
Ignorance is Strength"
What would Orwell think of us? I don't understand how anyone can know about the legislation that our government is trying to pass and NOT be concerned with the growing shift in power. As Daniel Webster said, "Our destruction, should it come at all, will be from another quarter. From the inattention of the people to the concerns of their government." -
Looks like they will do whatever THEY want and not what the people want or what the constitution stands for. What a shame seeing a great nation crumble. How are we going to save it?
