A college student apparently called 911 from her cell phone shortly before she was killed but a dispatcher hung up, failed to call back and never sent police to investigate, authorities said Thursday.

FIRST!!!
-
WTF thats just wrong. That dispatcher should be held responsible!
-
This not the first time I heard something like this. Apparently, I have heard from other people in conversation that this happened to people before. They called 911 and no one answered. WTF is up with that? This is kinda scary if you think about it. No, this is not comforting news at all.
-
Right. I had my life threatened, called 911, then after about an hour to an hour and a half, called 911 a second time and repeated that my life was being threatened - and then about an hour later - a single police car arrived.
Of course, the message was clear, I had to deal with this on my own.
By the way - the LA County Sheriff's department substation was 3 blocks away.
I guess they were waiting for it to become important, like an actual murder.-

normally they do phone back. in this case, if she was killed "shortly" after the phone call, then it wouldn't have mattered because cops are usually never within 15 minutes of anything actually happening. i've called 911 on numerous occasions and almost always get a call back if my phone breaks out even in the middle of talking with someone. this is surprising, sad, yet, i don't foresee much being able to be done about it
-
That dispatcher definitely should be held responsible, the dispatcher should be fired, fined, and jailed. simple as that.

Short of yelling 'fire' or 'help' these people are supposed to be our first and, really, only line of assistance. The tapes should be released, and if the girl asks for help, then the dispatcher should be fired.
The system here is obviously broken. If you're being threatened, as she was, sometimes you can only get a few words out. -
its really disturbing to think that you could be ignored if you were, for whatever reason, unable to explain in detail that you were in danger <I>after already</> making a physical call to 911.
i thought it was common knowledge, but for me, ever since i was old enough to use a phone, i was taught that 911 is only for if/when you have an emergency.
i would hope that anytime i call 911 they treat it like a serious and important call. otherwise, I'd have more luck just calling someone in my contact list....-

Does anyone remember Public Enemy rap about 911 years back?
-
This will be forgotten and no action will be taken.
Any bets? -
Why does it seem like anyone connected to the police department is never held responsible for their actions?

Calling 911 does not stop the occuring crime. That being said, the fact that there was no officer sent is criminal. and the dept head said 'there is nothing to apologize for'...well that is just pathetic.
-
the cops don't really do much unless it happens to one of their own or it gets big enough to require a response

There's an old saying that goes: "You could order pizza and call the cops, and the pizza will show up first."
That being said, even if a cop was sent, it possible the crime would not have been stopped, but at least they would have leads, or even have caught the convict...-

Release the tapes, hold the dispatcher responsible, find them negligent, shame him/her in the public eye. Compensate the family.
What more can we do? Public hanging? -
police cant really do much to prevent a crime and too often are faced with having to clean up after

gee, maybe we need to privatize 911...(just a thought since every one else wants to privatize something)
-
we could just outsource 911 to india .
-
If we did outsource 911 to India, We might get better service and faster response times.

And some people wonder why the Second Amendment should be listened to. The police get to the scene, unless by accident, in time to unroll the yellow tape and write the report. Dial 911 and die. This is why I carry a gun, so that the police department in my area does not have to say they are sorry.
-
I remember a couple of years ago when the cops told me... it's better to have guns then wait for us to reach you. And told me that just around that time it became a law that you can shoot or kill someone on your property and it would be considered self defense. Why the hell do we need the cops than for? I mean if I wanted to kill someone I wouldn't have called the cops for that right?

same here, me trusty .45 Kahr sub compact awaits all ye villians -
It's interesting that she was calling from her cell phone. 911 systems integrate with landlines better than cell phones--while the dispatcher was at fault for not calling back, they may not have been able to send someone out, since you can't determine a location from a cell phone the same way you can with a landline.
-
The dispactcher was probably busy tending to his or her phonesex clients that were on the other line...Seriously though, I hope that more investigations will be held to look deeper into this case. If anything, all costs and thensome should be provided for the victim's family by the government, or the police force...or at least the freakin dispatcher. I smell lawsuit all over this one.

yeah diode. Kahr builds a nice piece. I hope you never have to us it is a serious social situation but it's a comfort. The .45ACP is a favorite of the wife and I. We carry one because no one makes a .46
