A mathematical theoretician, she has made contributions in areas like robotics and biology. Her biggest accomplishment — and at age 39, she is expected to make more — is creating a set of computational tools for artificial intelligence that can be used by scientists and engineers to do things like predict traffic jams, improve machine vision and understand the way cancer spreads.
Ms. Koller is part of a revival of interest in artificial intelligence. After three decades of disappointments, artificial intelligence researchers are making progress. Recent developments made possible spam filters, Microsoft’s new ClearFlow traffic maps and the driverless robotic cars that Stanford teams have built for competitions sponsored by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.
Ms. Koller is beginning to apply her algorithms more generally to help scientists discern patterns in vast collections of data.

sometimes i think we are already artificially intelligent.

I think it's amazing that what used to be just silly plots in sci-fi shows are slowly getting closer to reality. Good job, Koller.

um...i hope you have everything settled with copyrights on that image...nowadays, companies are getting a little paranoid about their stuff being available on convenient sites like youtube, myspace, etc. and they're fining...but yeah, in comment to your post, i think robots like this are pretty cool...we can definitely use it to our benefit...what i worry about the most is that we'll rely too heavily on it and it's going to replace future jobs, and we all know that's an issue that's a little too close to home

This is pretty sweet and all, but ya know has anyone ever seen the movie the terminator or I robot? I am kinda glad I wont be alive to see robots take over the world. =)

Look, this is cool and all, but for real, I don't want it to go down like it did in the Matrix you know? Yes, I am paranoid. We can't even get along with each other, man...
ps Doesn't that look like Summer Glau?

Its weird how we cant feed, clothe, and shelter the people on Earth now, but yet we are trying to find a way to create more of us. All I have to say is most of the "benefits" man have created have often been followed by a problems. Be careful, this could easily get out of hand.

Artificial Intelligence is already here. They just don't look like us yet.

Remember Steven Spielberg's movie A. I. - it was so sad!

To be honest, I'm not in favor of this.
While AI systems would be a benefit in many ways, they are a terrifying idea. We could be creating sentient life forms.
While it may seem trite to mention fictional films and books on this issue, I think there are SERIOUS philosophical, ethical and even practical questions to consider before developing complex and learning AI systems. We don't know what could happen.

it has to be a nefarious group subsidizing this and, sadly, they won't worry with your concerns I'd wager Saladin. They're "progressive" humanists after all with nothing to fear they'll tell you with a smile.
and since they haven't been so successful in biology labs "creating" the kind of life we find so easily apparent and magnificently "evolutionarily" abundant in the "real" world (heh...go figure, the brightest minds in the world STUMPED!), this is "virtually" by far the best attempt to circumvent any limitation of the ascendant god-like qualities of man alone. This alongside creating gene-modified monstrosities from pre-existant life forms will secure our future well into the iron grip of humanism where we are gods unto ourselves; awed by our own creations which shall soon rule the world, though many may decry it...

Whatever happened to the simple things in life. I am sad that our great grandchildren won't understand that concept. But they will have a cyborg buddy to keep them company. Yippee.
