In their first direct talks since the outbreak of violence in Tibet in March, Chinese officials met with representatives of the Dalai Lama on Sunday, although it was unclear whether there was any progress in easing tensions between Beijing and the exiled Tibetan leader.

China does not want Tibet to be a black eye while they take center stage during the Olympics.

Will this meeting result in a breakthrough?

My cynical side tells me this is a headline grabber designed by an increasingly savvy information department somewhere inside the Chinese administration.

My optimistic side thinks it is a farce.

  • I don't know, man. From a purely opinionated stand point, if you haven't worked out a peaceful resolution with the Dalai Lama up until this point, my skepticism will remain right where it is...

  • The Chinese government has been mistreating the Tibetans for the last 50 years and are now demanding that things go back to normal. I hope this ends up as a huge welt on the Chinese government's reputation.
  • As much as I hate to say it, I wouldn't be surprised if we're all speaking chinese in 30 years.
  • Reckon this is propaganda to improve China's image in the pre-olympic season. What remains to be seen is whether there will be any positive developments after the olympics.

  • As the Dalai Lama would say, "Give Peace a Chance", perhaps we should all back up the Dalai Lama by opening our hearts and visualizing peace. That's what he would do for us. ;)

As sad as it is to say, the Chinese superpower will not bow down to anyone in Asia, let alone anyone in the Eastern Hemisphere. The incorporation of Capitalism into an already dictatorship system has warped China into a force that many folks would not reckon with. Someone has to be stepped on in this Capitalistic system we live in sadly, and it is ridiculous that one of the world's spiritual leaders and a group of folks which I have no reason to believe are nothing less than are great peaceful folks, will be stepped on. We do need peace, and we do need change, now.

  • Bless You aaronklong! ;)
  • The Dalai Lama is an inspiration to mankind, the Chinese in reality just wants to wipe him and Tibet off the face of the earth.

  • Please!! STOP I CANT TAKE ANYMORE OF THE HUGE PICTURES AND VIDEOS OF THE DALAI LAMA. my heart it hurts. While the size is minimizing it is still not enough. JK

Anyway is China purely altruistic? Methinks they just dont want countries participating in the Olympics to hate them. Olympics first, persecute Dalai Lama later. Alls fair in love and WAR ...and hate too (Ha!)

PS. aaronklong, Love the Banksy pic for your icon.
  • the Dalai Lama

Should be supported by this Country MORE.

Then perhaps those in China might value some common ground.
