Nine Inch Nails for free. Again.

Trent Reznor introduces his latest album, The Slip, with a note that reads, "Thank you for your continued and loyal support over the years -- this one's on me."

He means it. The album is available for free in what could be the perfect array of digital formats: MP3, lossless (FLAC or Apple) or 24-bit, 96-kHz WAV files that sound better than the CD would have, if Reznor had bothered to release one yet. Vinyl and CD versions will go on sale in July, according to the Nine Inch Nails site.

You can stream all of The Slip starting Monday on iLike or download it for free with a valid e-mail address.

The album is more song-oriented than the instrumental abstraction of the band's recently released Ghosts I-IV, with full vocal tracks and the sort of dark, grimy loops that helped Reznor make his name.

Not only is The Slip available for free, but it was released under the Creative Commons "attribution noncommercial share-alike" license. A note on the NIN site says: "We encourage you to remix it, share it with your friends, post it on your blog, play it on your podcast, give it to strangers, etc."

The MP3 version of the album is available as a direct download from a server, while the larger files (lossless and high-resolution) are available as torrent downloads. All versions come with a printable PDF with the album cover, the track listing and artwork for each track. The liner notes list the release date as January 2008, but aside from "Discipline" and "Echoplex" (.mp3) none of the songs have been previously released.

  • that's really cool, especially the creative commons license. its great how all these artists are embracing the digital age and the sharing of art and knowledge through the internet. not that he needs it, but hopefully reznor will make some money for his efforts.

  • awesome. reznor is the man. he sees the future of music and information sharing. we should all have equal access to info and should be constantly collaborating with others to further our creative endeavors. he had a great interview on NPR the other week too:

  • I've always liked Nine Inch Nails, but Trent's activities within the last couple years are amazing.

He's really trying to step his game up and he's putting out great material.

  • thanks for the heads up.

NIN is more prolific than ever before and they're reaching out to let fans use there last instrumental album as a score for short films. If anyone wants to some experimental and narrative shorts set to Ghosts tracks check out:

Trent Reznor continues to be a visionary leader of the music scene in more ways than one. I've always loved NIN and I wish their upcoming concert tour all the success in the world.

  • mp3 files suck... music is so disposable to the ipod generation, it's just a slicker sony walkman, i would never listen to NIN music in that format... people are such sheep... And I suppose since I didn't suck up to the Current folks and say how wonderful NIN is, which they are, they choose not to air this post but the one above...... But thank you Trent, or should I say the slick label execs who are clueless...

I love NIN so much. Thanks Trent for actually trying to move forward from this corrupt music industry. I welcome all you stand for, and your sound is great!

  • It says a lot about a famous rock band when they don't judge their audience for listening to music in the mp3 format, but rather, progress with the times and evolving technology to meet the needs and desires of their fans.

Underestimating and condescending an audience for the way they purchase, share and listen to music is not a way to honor one's fans.

    Just ask Lars Ulrich.

  • NIN has always been great, but Trent's recent activities have just been truly awesome. I don't remember which album it was, but he actually uploaded one of his CD's to ThePirateBay himself. I think it's amazing when somebody could make a ton of money off something and just gives it out for free.

  • Sounds like Radiohead to me! (not the music, but what he's done. XD)
  • @ slightlyavocado:
NIN's done this before, and planned it far before Radiohead. Plus NIN is being consistent with this, Radiohead has declined to make In Rainbows free again.

  • If Trent had his way, he wouldn't record anything...
he'd probably just stream the recording sessions, giving fans the option to download/remaster/mix the tracks any way they'd like.
His music has always been above the fray and ahead of the curve when it comes to embracing technology.

  • FERSURE!! i just started in on the session files and am lovin them. Trent is pretty much a god in the music industry and the fact that he can produce what hes producing so fast and amazingly only means one thing. When an artist has the freedom from a constricting label to produce something that "will sell" they limit themselves and only put out what is deemed "marketable" while now trent can produce anything and everything he is doing which really keeps the fans like me on the edge of their seat waiting for not the next single, but the next e-release of what would usualy come out every 1-3 years!!!!

  • Trent is a great musical icon, one that people should look up to. Music for free? That's an idea not too many have the guts to do.

Free, as I believe it should be; with a way for donations to be made if you really want to contribute to them.

Two thumbs up for the album too, it sounds great.
