The prospect of slipping into a robotic exoskeleton that could enhance strength, keep the body active while recovering from an injury or even serve as a prosthetic limb has great appeal. Unlike the svelt body armor donned by Iron Man, however, most exoskeletons to date have looked more like clunky spare parts cobbled together.
Japan's CYBERDYNE, Inc. is hoping to change that with a sleek, white exoskeleton now in the works that it says can augment the body's own strength or do the work of ailing (or missing) limbs. The company is confident enough in its new technology to have started construction on a new lab expected to mass-produce up to 500 robotic power suits (think Star Wars storm trooper without the helmet) annually, beginning in October, according to Japan's Kyodo News Web site.

Gundam!! Its a Gundam!!!

Not down. I'm so against robots. I don't see why everyone wants to get so far away from being vulnerable and human. I understand protection, but this is overkill.

I can completely see the benefits of an exoskeleton. which, at least imo, out way potential further depersonalization caused by robots. Are exoskeletons even technically robots?
-
Cyberdyne? Nooooo!!!!
-
I knew if giant fighting robots or mechanized body armor were going to come to be, they would be created in Japan.

why is it that this exo-skeleton has to look like one of Darth Vader's storm-troopers ? just another example of life imitating Star Wars .
-
that would be great for my contractor.maybe the job would get done.
-
If they start coming out with a line of exoskeletons named "Skynet", then everyone should head for the nearest bomb shelter.

I have to say, it's pretty clever to name a robotics company Cyberdyne. Kudos to the exec who thought that one up, pretty funny.
As to the issue, I think it's a great thing in theory. I don't know how well it works in practice so I can't comment too much on that, to be honest I'm a bit skeptical. But if it works well, more power to the human race.
As far as the issue of robots in general goes, I do get a bit concerned. The prospect of an individual AI system that can possibly learn to recognize its own existence needs to be examined as more than a just cool new technological innovation. It's dangerous and frightening and needs to be treated seriously. -
This is actually pretty old, HAL has been around since... 01'? But its still cool. Was meant for medical use, but seems that every one will want to be the next cyborg
-
Ahh! The robot suit is called HAL!!!
Now we are truly screwed.-

I think that Japan is taking their fixation with anime a little to far...and the engineers responsible for this design are probably super geeks!...

so the suit is called HAL, the company is CYBERDYNE, and it looks kind of like a storm trooper meets anime mech.
either the designers are really into Sci-Fi or this is one hell of a viral ad.-

Oh my gosh that's amazing! However, there's no doubt that this technology will soon be used in war and violence and be turned against our welfare.

Fashion in robotics is important! The closer we get to Cylon/Human union, the more we'll want style choices! At least I know I will. Wonder what colors we're talking?
