This years celebration of Big Brown's amazing victory at the Kentucky Derby was overshadowed by the tragic death of the runner up. Known as Eight Belles, the female horse (or filly) miraculously beat out the entire field with one exception. Normally considered a victory in its own right, the second place 3-year old horse broke both of her front ankles shortly after crossing the finish line. The medical response although swift was hopeless and the horse was euthanized on the track.

  • It can't fall on the jockey alone. There are people with deep, deep pockets behind these horses. The people spending millions of dollars behind these animals aren't concerned with the horses' well-being- the animals are insured. As long as their output is 100% performance in a handful of races- it's fine. "Get me my return."

These aren't horses. They are zero-liability corporations. Once a return is fetched, the fate of the beasts is of little concern to anyone involved.

Let's leverage our friends together. The time is now- we have peoples' emotions, it's fresh in their minds. We can still throw salt in the wound.

  • This is such a sad situation. That's two of the Triple Crown races in the past few years where a horse has broken its leg. I don't like this pattern, it makes me think they are abusing the horses by running them to hard with drugs.

  • What I see is that, as in the rest of the competitive sports, winning is the ONLY thing that matters.
totally disgusting, and I did at one time love to watch the horses -- grew up around racers, road the slow ones, no one would ever think that such a thing could have happened, EVER.
